Re: 3.0d engine knocking badly PROBLEM FOUND!

Well it's been a long old day but the problem has been found. The big end bearings on piston one have disintegrated destroying the crank surface in the process. Only part of one bearing was present so the other I take it is the swarf and bits on the sump
Now the search for a new complete or short engine. Pain in the ass doing it on jack and axel stands though

Just to note. Car has done fully documented 120k with full history. Guess its just bad luck.

That's got to be gutting for you. It's a rare event too as I can't remember anyone else on here having a bottom end failure and 120k really is no distance for a modern diesel (or petrol) engine.
I wonder if the loss of an injector (or injector performance) led to excess vibration which then took out the bearing nearby?
Hopefully you can find an engine quickly and get back on the road. I dread to think what BMW might want for a short lump so that has to be a 'no' in your choices list.....

Definite no no to bmw option. I might try them for a price just to make me laugh
I am annoyed but its one of those, my previous e46 330d did 240k without an issue and was still going strong when I "upgraded" to the X. All the injectors came back perfect after the check so really not sure what caused it. Oh well the X will live to see another day

Feel for there mate.
Might just have been a 'soft' bearing, but when they start to go, especially in a diesel with the increased compression ratio, they go in style. Just glad it didn't throw a rod at an inopportune moment on you.
Good luck with the search, sure there are a few hundred X's being broken with reasonable mileage if you want to go the cheaper route.

There's quite a few newly listed breaking x5s on e bay buddy.

Thanks mate that's a great help. Been ringing round today and starting to get bit fed up of it now. Most remanufactured options want the old unit back when they deliver the new one which is a pain as I was planning on having the new one delivered, taking old one out when I get chance and sending it back in 2 weeks or so when it was done. Just a bit of a pain with work. Oh well something will come up.

Just trying to decide which is best option. What do you guys think. Reconditioned full engine for £2k or one from a breakers in Birmingham for £1500 that the bloke "says" has done 25k out of a 06 plate. I'm going to try and get the donor cars details to check mot mileage history.

Recon any day. That '06 unit may cost you more than the £500 difference in bits and with no comeback. Having a warranted rebuild (I'm assuming it is) could be worth £500 in hassle alone..
