21 to 24 in London sounds reasonable.  Suggest you reset either Con1 or Con2 just before you leave for the Birmingham trip, and the other one as you get on the motorway, then sit on cruise as far as is reasonable.  Would be interested to hear the results!

Just back from a fortnight in France, so after a re-fill in a few hours I will work out my mpg and post.

Right then.

Over the last 1300 miles, 5 up with the boot laden, cruise control set at 75 on the motorways ( most of the distance ) and driving sensibly, I managed to attain 29 mpg, not quite the obc's 34 but hell, when have they ever been right? The car has the mixed map too.

How does that compare to others?

My experience over 6 BMWs is that the OBC is - in round terms - about 5% optimistic, so your difference between 29 and 34 is a little 'worse' than I've seen.

MPG-wise: I've never owned a diesel E53 but my 2010 E70 35d (at the speeds youmention) would do more than 29, more like 32 to 34.  Then again, it's a newer car with different aerodynamics, engine and drive train so I don't think it unreasonable to do a few mpg more.  My feeling is that other with E53s like your have done a few more mpg so I believe it's still worth your while confirming all is well.  Good luck!
