Was told there was no real way of checking until the transfer case had been replaced either!

Seems like an increasing issue unfortunately. At least with almost an entirely new drivetrain you'll be set for the foreseeable

Mine was theoretically under warranty from the garage I purchased, but once they realised the extent of the job, they strung me along for a month and then put themselves into liquidation! You can imagine I found the whole thing hilarious..
