Genuinely sorry to hear this, especially in the current climate.

Time to put the feelers out.  Linkedin now seems to be the best place for headhunters and job opportunities, especially in IT.

Perhaps polish up your profile on there too and get some folks to give recommendations.

I am in the industry, so anything I might be able to assist with, just ping me.  Nothing ventured and all that.

Keep your chin up and look at it as a challenge/opportunity rather than a problem/threat!

Sorry to hear you news, and I hope there is a role suitable there, or if not you get something quickly as the job market seems to be hard.

And as you said sometimes it leads to a better situation.

Good luck with that one. I remember you were slightly concerned during the last round of cuts at the company.

The company has indeed had a few kicks lately, including losing the entire world wide contract of the client where I am doing the work for in Russia.

Not a good predicament to be in.  I cannot really imagine being in that sitution.  In a way I have been fortunate and worked for Royal Mail since leaving school back in 2000.

Having said that what with the part privatisation which is immanent who knows what the future holds.  Still at least the employees are set to get a 10% share.  :))
I personally am dead set against it for various reasons.  First thing to change will be our hourly rate as we are well paid for what we do.  God help whats left of our pensions.  :'(
And as for my 6 weeks annual leave + bank holidays ..............  :chair:
I just hope by me commenting on this has not tempted fate.  :-[

Given the state of the public finances, I'm not surprised they're looking at this. Recent news reports have suggested they're also looking to sell off some/all of the stake in Lloyds and RBS.  Makes you wonder if they are not being completely honest and panicking behind the scenes...

I can't see this ring-fencing of pensions, education and health lasting much longer either.

Well that's that.......after 3 months being paid to sit and sit twiddling my thumbs at home, it seems I am to be 'released' at the end of October along with getting on for 200 of my colleagues.  Not much notice but I may be able to go into some form of gardening leave for a few weeks, but that's only a stop gap.

No idea what I'm going to do next.  The IT industry is in a mess globally and I would have to get a very good offer to go back to it.  No one is buying new machines, or refreshing kit and the 'Cloud' is the way forward.  I might get enough severance to give me a few months of safety, but that's all.  Seems to be the way of things and likely to remain that way for a few years yet.  This is the first time Managers have been culled and a few of us are now surplus.

Time to put my CV on the wires now I at least have a date.  Too poor and too young to retire...... :(

I guess the uncertainty is as much concern as the numbers. I won't BS with complex advice as I am sure you know your currently employed  industry and skill set far better than I do - only thing I can contribute is to wish you lick with networking and standing out from crowd. Many an inspirational time played on an old fiddle ;)
