[/quote]I doubt they will do that as they would have to remove the insulated heat shield to give it a tap .
For reference the BMW dpf's are made very well and they are much thicker than the likes of what VAG use.
If you remove just the dpf block you could leave the cat in place.

You can tell if the DPF has been removed, or gutted on a car easy enough. Look at your exhaust tail pipe, if its got a working DPF the inside of the tailpipe will be clean and almost shiny
If the DPF has been removed just run your finger inside and you will have a black sooty finger
Hence cars with no DPF had down turned exhaust tips.

Nor me given that VOSA could seize the vehicle for non-compliance.  As long as you don't get caught then fine, but if you do.......  I would not want to lose a £60k car thanks very much.  The potential penalties could include no insurance, non-compliant vehicle, underpaying VED so resulting in HMRC recovery & fines, points, loss of the car etc etc.

Would the missing DPF not cause an engine light if the system could not regenerate?  Or can that be programmed out?  I don't know what sensor tells the ECU that the system needs to regen, but I know if mine is mid-cycle when I turn the engine off then a number of engine fan or fans keep running.  Some part of the DDE system must tell the fan to run on?

There is a pressure sensor in the DPF that has a preset differential, when the back pressure increases due to the clogging of the filter it triggers a regen, only if the temperature of the Exhaust is sufficient to burn off the soot, so if the light comes on due to back pressure the regen will occur if the temperature is high enough, hence the need to take it for a blast to generate enough heat to burn off the soot.

I will start by saying what I know about DPF fits on the back of a stamp.

Howevere I have heard/read lots about these filters getting blocked and they being a lot of money to replace.

Did you know these DPF can be cleaned. Yes indeed...............
All you need is a large sonic cleaner................the same kind of machine they use to clean motorbike carbs, etc etc.

[/quote]You can also clean them on the car with a product like Wurth  DPF cleaner http://www.wurth.co.uk/technical-chemic ... aner-400ml.
I have been told it works well, you spray it into the dpf via the pressure sensor pipe and then once its soaked in you do a forced regen.

Im learning a lot about these dpf,s....
But how do you do a forced regen.?

[/quote]Most independent BMW specialists will have the diagnostic kit to do a forced regen but even then if the back pressure sensor is reading to high I think that will even stop a forced regen.
I know there was  a guy on the BMWland forum that had DPF issues and the car wouldn't regen on its own due to the back pressure sensor readings being too high, he put  a very small split in the hose that goes to the pressure sensor to fall the ecu ie it gave it a lower reading and then it did a regen straight away. You obviously take the risk of doing something like that yourself as BMW has put the safe guards in there for a reason.

Makes petrols seem more reasonable when you factor this in with higher costs of diesel the possible fuel savings are now outweighed.

Except that Euro VI requires all new petrol cars to be fitted with GPF systems - the equivalent of a DPF.

Seems few are to escape.

At least diesel owners will have a spare tank to wee in...... :puke:
