Sorry if I gave impression I need serious off road capability - I don't  :-[.

I was just interested to know the spec of the X5.

I thought they had hi/low box as when I put mine in manual from auto and push the loud pedal, it will kick up a gear and shift, but then ever so slightly off the pedal, it kind of what feels like engages another lower gear but it is still in the same gear, its like it has a lower more reserved part of that gear.

Probably talking bolx but that what mine feels like.lol

Johnte,

I apologise for taking 535dboys bait. He can take a little getting used too.  As you can see, behind his short response he was answering your question.  The X5 is a very good car and with the right tyres does have a limited ability off road.  The Hill Decent is good if a little weird when using but to date I have only every used it once.

You are.  :))

There is no low ratio gear box and a reason that the likes of TG don't like the X.

I tried the hill descent in the bad weather going down a very steep snow covered hill on a country road with 20" summer tyres on (lets not even go there!) to see what it did and It did pretty much what it was meant to do, so being honest, in my use thats probably the only scenario that it will get used in.
Its still nice to know its there if you ever need it.
I think it was borrowed from LR wasn't  it?

This is why BMW bought RR cos they recognised they were the expects when it came to 4x4 and bough the tech to launch the X5

I (rightly or wrongly) thought that BM brought the engine know how to the party and LR the off road stuff.

Sure the X5 wont go anywhere a RR or LR will go.. But its not hopeless if fitted with the right tyres.

Just remember as standard, it wont have much under body protection, and you really don't want to bottom out. It's also lacking low range, so that can put quite a lot of stress on the engine If you get too adventurous.

That said it does have some good points too. It's wheels are right in the corners, front and rear. Very little overhang, so it's unlikely to scrape its butt on the ground when coming down off a steep incline and the Hill decent control does work.

Serious off-roaders often bobtail the range rover so that it doesn't beach itself coming off a hill :) (See top gear special where Clarkson got stuck with the back wheels off the ground, car hanging off its rear bumper)

With the right tyres, and good driver, the X5 can do quite a bit... But then again if its your daily driver.. Most X owners prefer to keep their cars nice and shiny :)

The X is fantastic on gravel paths (forest tracks) where they are reasonably pothole free, and not so rutted that you bottom out.

80% Tyres 20% car imho. and knowing the limitations of your car regardless of what you drive.
