I'm with 1st central insurance and I pay £533 fully comp. I'm 31 years old, have 3 points on my licence and they don't require a tracker!

Swiftcover is definitely cheaper with a tracker (for me, anyway) and You'll find the costs not too prohibitive.

A boggo standard Tracker monitor cost me £175 fitted and approx £300 for the time I own the car.  Not bad.  Not worth getting an all singing/dancing one as makes zero difference to the premium for a ton more money.

When I brought my X5, in with all the paper work were lots of tracker related papers.  What and where would the tracker be? if the previous owner didnt remove it (if possible).

Only the installer and Tracker will know. Unlikely previous owner would have taken it out. Could always do as I state above and call Tracker to confirm if fitted or not.

And they'll know the general location too. Mine did.

No tracker required by my insurers - Tesco initially, now Kwik Fit.

My last car had a tracker but I never mentioned it to insurance or had it operational - When I sold it the purchaser mentioned when shopping for insurance, as discussed earlier it was going to INCREASE his premiums along with addition of tracker subscriptions!

I guess reason is that it is possible to hack into system and track a desirable car?

It's because cars with trackers frequently suffer more damage to the interior when the thieves rip panels apart to find the hidden box.

The pro thieves have the necessary hardware to deal with these devices, or they just park the car somewhere like a lock-up and see if anyone comes looking.

Trackers not as bigger a deal now as most thefts now take place with stealing the keys so tracker is rendered useless in this situation until informed to track it. As for the locations..........PMSL....most fitters put them in the same damn places (no bloody imagination or conscience).

Which is why the type I used was installed by the OEM supplier we used when I worked for UK Gov, and even I don't know where it is hidden.  He never used the same place twice, and was quite inventive with some of his locations...... :P

BMW supposedly even made a space especially for it if owners bought the 'Tracker' type of device with their new toy as one of the Dealer fitted options.  I never use 'Tracker' systems.

thanks guys for sharing these valuable information! I would definitely shop around this year as I thought I would stuck to the equity red star as other companies require tracker so that they can offer a better deal than what I have from equity red star. It seems not.

My old car was insured with Direct Line and when I bought the X5, they said they wouldnt insure the X5 without a tracker and even if I did, they wanted £500+!!!!! Went to Compare The Market and got insured with no tracker from Axa for £320!! Was a bit pissed off tho as I only had 7 weeks insurance left with my old car and I would have gained another years no claims! :(
