Absolutely. They've brought out Sdrive X3s, after all.

Tbh I didn't realise there was that available on the X3 till I read your post Huck. I hadn't paid that much attention to the motoring press for quite some time. This will explain why many carry the xdrive logo on the side now, right?
My X5 just has the model on the side, is that because it's pre facelift? Bring me up to speed please .

It's pre-efficient dynamics. My car only had 3.0d on the side.
The xdrive named models for the X5 came in around Oct 07 with more efficient engines and better CO2. I know this because I bought a May 07 thinking I'd done my research and was a little shocked when the car tax bill came and it was over £400 as opposed to approximate £250 for the October onward models.

Ok. Thanks.
Mine is a 58 plate though. Odd

I'm probably wrong then!
Maybe xdrive models came later but the revised engines definitely came in 07.
I think you're right and xdrive came in after facelift. I think the engines became more efficient again at this point.
IIRC, the combined on mine was about 30mpg. On the ED that followed soon after, it was about 34mpg and the xdrive that followed that was about 37/38.

Xdrive came in with the post facelift E53. It was the eight speed gearbox that gave the increase in economy.

Mine is the cheaper road tax which was a nice surprise (I got a year's in the deal, hence I only saw it on the disc!). I had nearly bought an 07 plate so pleased that deal didn't work out. Mine has more spec too.
Just wondered why mine only has the 3.0d on the side.
I must start paying attention to ones I see out and about and the age. Although most seem to have private plates on. (incl mine)

I don't think that's right Don. Xdrive (as in the naming of the models) came in after I had my e70 - so probably 2008. My E70 didn't have an eight speed transmission, I'm sure of that. That came in with the facelift E70 I think.

Yes it was an April fool joke but turned into an interesting thread. I'd def want switchable 4x4 if an option!!

Good one.
Thinking about it, I can't see the higher end models being 2wd. But then again, I just can't see the attraction of the 2wd X3.
Where there a market or niche, BMW will fill it, that's a certainty.

Good one......
xDrive system did indeed come in on the Facelifted E53 along with the ZF 6-speed box. Modified versions went into the E70 & 71. The real economy shift was with the 8-speed transmission which arrived on various models in 2010 I think. Hence the lower VED tax band too for those models.
Oh, and there is this model in the new X5 (F15) line-up (though initially for the US market only) -
F15 sDrive 25d - N47D20, 2WD
