Regardless of looks or brand, for me it would come down to how the car drives and performs. Given the previous record of both the RS4/5 and 'M' there is a clear winner.

The M4  :drive:

the pics in Car mag last month looked awesome.

How important is the cars ultimate ability these days.  One, they are all made to deliver a very high standard, and two, when can you really get anywhere near the potential these days on our roads.  Now if the car is going to be used on track days then that's a different story.

Very to me

You can still use a car hard and legally to establish dynamics. There is nothing wrong with pushing on on clear roads with good visibility. Yes you won't get to the limit but you can tell how the car is behaving.

Mine has a trick re diff and when you chuck it in corners you can feel doing its thing and tightening the line

This is the first four wheel drive car I've had they you can actually drift and control on the throttle.

None of the press articles I've read on the RS5 cab have been great. In fact most point you towards the M3 and if you don't require the rear seats the Boxster S  ::)  also common feedback is that he S5/ 3.0TDi would do the job equally as well.

The Quattro ability is clearly a huge draw which is understandable for every day use and given resent weather a real bonus. An M3 would just not have chance  >:D

The rear wheel drive set up has always been a draw to me, this in combo with good weight distribution and excellent steering make for great feel/feedback. This all probably harks back to my Lotus days and I'm sure 535dboy will undear stand this point of view.

It is all about personal preference and this thread would look somewhat different had it been on an Audi site  :) haven driven a couple of E92 M3's I would struggle to part with my money for anything else should I ever be in such a position  ::)

ultimate ability - i still like capability although in reality we'd never push a car to the levels that these cars start to give in. like at which point they start to under-steer etc. guess its bragging rights..

exterior looks - M4 all the way. RS5 is dated although the A5 series looked nice when new.

interior - bmw interiors look dated. time to change their overly minimalist interior design principles. not that i like audi though - just too many buttons too geeky.

btw no hearse for me... untill i have to go in a coffin lol. exterior shape just doesn't work for me.

I agree I don't think anybody is too excited about the RS5 cab

Clearly the boxster will whip both cars and even fully specced it will be cheaper!

I also agree that the S5 and even the 3.0tdi is as much of a car as you need but then they wouldn't make the better ones if people didn't buy them. Why did you want a 123d over a 116d!?

For an ultimate drive in the dry yes a rear driver is probably a bit more fun (even on a damp/cold track the 997 GT3 RS I just spent the weekend with were assume) but the rear biased Quattro with sports diff is a revelation and I would say as adjustable as a rear driver.

I didn't - I went a day later than the others (arrived mid Saturday pm) so only got pax laps that afternoon.

Got to the Sunday for my day and it was a white out and we had to gingerly drive back to the Chunnel on track tyres on snow. That taught as some lessons in car control!!!

Yup but probably looked a picture when we changed our mind on our direction and decided to reverse about a mile because we were too nervous to turnaround! You can imagine how difficult that was in the exige and snow!

Just re-booked this for July then need to look at dates for other things. Possible monza and mugello in October.

Need to get some brands evenings in and probably Silverstone and the track day at LeMans. Need to use it more this year, only did 2k in it last year and that included LeMans

The boys are coming out to play on Sunday in the supercars so will probably take mine out fr a run then

I'd go with the M4, the audi never looked manly enough, just on the wrong side of beefed up.
The rear of the current M3 has the same problem, the M4 may suffer from this too, time will tell.
