Exactly biggest load of s***e I've ever heard.

My thoughts are that the cars suspension etc is designed with run flats in mind so if you take out one element of their design feature then you could be compromising safety

I think in reality we know this is not true but in the eyes of the insurers....

It doesn't surprise me. Insurers always quick to take your money but find any excuse not to pay out!

I see no reason why this local garage proprietor, (who I have met before), would lie over such a matter, (albeit without connecting a lie detector I cannot be more certain as to the accuracy of info).

Some may wish check with own insurers.........some may dismiss this info.

Either way - Members have been duly warned re this potential issue.

If that's the case what about aftermarket parts ie brake pads, discs etc etc where should it end, still can't/won't believe it.

As said, the EU are looking at doing exactly that.  Aftermarket parts needing approval.  It's complete madness with the Consumer getting fleeced... >:(

I have spoken to my insurance brokers (hughes insurance) who are using Axa to cover my car and they have no problem with using non run flats.  I have asked for an email to cover myself should this issue arise in the future.

Thanks for the heads up AW8, I think it's highlighted a possible loop hole for some insurance companies, and would advise for the sake of a phone call, all who use or intend to use non run flats they should get confirmation from their insurance providers.

I would hope that in the vast majority of cases the result would be the same.

Perhaps some brokers offering cheap deals have so many 'get outs' that anything different like an air freshener on the mirror, or pvr's pink fluffy dice in the Z4M would result in a non-payout.. :P

Glad info may assist those, (potentially affected), & who may wish to seek clarification for sake of a call.

I've now received an email confirmation that alls well from the insurance company so feeling a lot happier, especially  as  I'm running non run flat winters at present.

I've switched run flats to standard on our mini's, E87's and E90. The various insurance companies were spoken to at the time and none were interested as the OEM alloys were retained in each case.

Current insurers don't even note on the policy when winters are in use anymore.

OP were the speed and load index of the non run flat tyres lower than OEM on the mini ?? I'd expect that to have a bigger impact on decision. There has to be more to the story.

When I was going from rf's to non rf's on my E60, my insurance company said that as long as the tyres were the correct size and speed rating, all was well. Seems like an attempted get out to me.

Exactly what my insurers told me as well.

I have had one dealer (well salesman) tell me that you can't fit non runflat tyres to a standard BMW wheel.

I think its pretty common that anything outside of the original spec of the car, including options with some insurers is classed as a modification to the vehicle, and not mentioning such will invalidate the insurance.
The have it on the recorded message for a reason, we told you so!

Some insurance companies display common sense whilst others..... >:(

Always get something in writing, even if the phone call seems to indicate there's no issue.  In these situations, I'd write an email straight away, detailing the conversation I've just had and ask for a reply to confirm the details as I had written them.
