Sorry for the :hijacked:
I have a 2006 3.0 diesel with Webasto under the bonnet but no remote control.
When i open the menu pictured above i have the 2 timers & aux ventilation but no mention of heating!
I have noticed that when i unlock the doors something fires up under the bonnet.
Does this mean my heater only starts up when i'm just about to get into the car? If so what a useless extra (i know it was standard on the diesel) to fit to a car.
Only reason i want this verified is i may consider doing the Maplin relay mod.
Thanks in advance,
Martyn.
The webasto isn't to heat the cabin area...that was an after thought by bmw (to charge extra  ) AFAIK it is fitted to pre heat the oil in the diesel models as the oil is much thicker/heavier than that of the petrol versions.Hence why all diesels have the webasto and most petrol models don't only those who added it as an optional extra.
As fenj66 said if you don't have a remote and it only says auv vent you don't have it.Aux vent can be programed to come on just the same but will only blow cold air into the cabin. HTH
Hi Mitch

I know I'm dim but are you saying it does not heat the cabin area as mine does ?
Hi Penny....what i meant was that if you don't have the oem set up with the remote like yours or an aftermarket mod like mine then you don't have 'aux heating' and will not get warm air into the cabin area like ours.
However you still would have aux ventilation which you can also program on the obc to come on but it will only blow cold air into the cabin.
I hope that makes sense now as i'm begining to waffle on a bit here...
Brilliant advice guys - can't thank you enough.
You would think i'd have learnt by now not to believe ANY salesmen (even BMW ones!).
My dealer is in for a stroppy phonecall & i may even go down the mis-selling route here. This is the 2nd option that i had described to me that it now appears my car doesn't have (the 1st being an aux socket for i-pod).
I'll see what they offer me but at least i know by the fantastic writeups on here i can get heater working anyway!
Thanks again,
Martyn.
Have you checked in the glove box for an aux input ? as bmw used to sell one that plugged into the back of the headunit and were often put into the glove box out of the way with the ipod.
It wasn't a very good option as you had no control over the ipod but one that worked nonetheless

x555 - i have checked glovebox & nowt there! I now realise salesman spouted a lot of crap about what he THOUGHT my car had.
Case in point was aux socket - i was back in to get something else sorted & gave him the 'i can't get my i-pod to play' story, 'yeah you just go into the menu here - oh, that's not working' was the phrase he used when i dragged him out to my car to SHOW me!!
Anyway, they'll be getting a phonecall with all of my 'thoughts' next week so watch this space!!
I'm still astounded with the x5 knowledge on this site - thanks again to everyone who has posted.
Martyn.

Hi - Thanks for the replies, apologies for not coming back in but I was expecting an email when someone posted that never came!!

Penny - Yes, when I click 'On' on my fob the green light starts flashing intermitently so i think that part of the system is ok. I also have a AUC warranty on the car so I will make a call this afternoon and try to find out whether I have a problem. I presume that after it went in for the warranty work the greyed out menu options were then activated?

I've tried running my iPod through the AV aux in and wasn't too happy with the sound quality although I haven't had a look around to see whether there is another in the vehicle though!!

Sound exactly like what I had. I sort of expected as much but didn't want to say but when you said you had AUC I went phew :-)

Glad you got it done and the fact that you had the warranty.

On my 4.8 I have aux vent but not heating. However under the bonnet there is the space for the webasto and the there are plugs there I assume for it too. Do you think it will be possible to get the webasto and the oe remote and the Jason to code and hey presto??? Would prefer it to be OE to have the aux heating.

I shouldn't see why not!! but it would cost a small fortune the reciever and transmitter/remote conrtol would cost around £600 oem and that's without the purchase of the webasto and fitting it :o

here's a link to the oem setup provided by x5sport on another thread http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=64&fg=65

I'm not sure how they work with a petrol ??? as oposed to mine that uses deisel... they are available though at cost as condor has got one on the 4.8

That's a lot of money. My thinking was webasto off eBay and not too much for the remote but the remote and receiver are way too much. Oh well...

The remote set up can be sourced from ebay for around the £200 mark i think.IIRC Brewer on here did his oem and may have even got his from german ebay as there are plenty on there.
Those prices above are from the dealer brand new so there's still hope yet mate :D go on you know you wan't to add it to that long list of mods you have planned :poke: ;)
