BMWs numbering does seem a little confusing, especially when explaining to non BMW owners that its a twin turbo 3 litre but BMW call it a 40.  Get even more confused looks when explain they now have a 50 that's really a 3 litre with three turbos.  :'(

There is no decimal point though is there, on any of the cars.

It is a 40d or 50d

It started apparently in snobby Germany with the 535d where they wanted everybody to know that the car was different and better to a normal 530d.

Presumably a red 'd' like the VAG group used to do to the better diesels was not good enough!

I didn't get to bed!

No that is just where part of the problem lies

I gave up trying to explain it to people as I ended up looking more boring than they did stupid.

My X5 was a 3.0sd which of course meant it was inferior to the 35d!

Personally, I think the 30sd worked very well, although that would have meant an 30ssd for the triple turbo version.

Now mine did have dot in it as it was a 3.0 litre so 3.0sd

Keep up  ;)

To dot or not to dot? That is the question.

Or just de-badge it.  No daft questions after that... :)

Then everybody assumes you bought the shit one!

As a kid my next door neighbours dad did it every time and in those days you had to pay BMW for no badge!

I think he had 316, 318, 323, 523, 330i and now 330d. All debadged mainly stemming from his early days ofthe crap ones!

So turns out garage sent off the VIN number to one of the dealers to get the parts required and it was the dealer who got it wrong and sent the wrong badges. Dealer now paying for replacement 35d badges. As it happens it was the dealer I bought it from which makes it even worse!!! All is well that ends well....
