correction: I also had an E class before CLS mpg in real life was not too far from what was advertised. Cheers.

Maybe you should have bought a 4 pot M Class then !?

You won't get near advertised

It is a brand new engine and needs some miles on it

Must be a lot of short journeys in that average. They hate traffic because each time you set off you have to get >2t moving.

Reset computer

Do manual calculation in case computer is fooked (it is set to UK gallons too isn't - common cock up in PDI by dealers not to actually set the car up correctly)

I think I have been lucky with my other cars. figures advertised and what i got where not that different. I am actually a BMW fan but This fuel discrepancy is just not like what I am used to. After reading all comments I do not think it will improve much. I regret not buying X 5 M model.

There was a member on here that took it back to BMW because of the advertised Mpg being so far from the truth, and they swapped him for a 7 series.
The car is about 2.25 tonnes of twin turbo steel with a large shape to slip through the air. It's not surprising they are heavy on fuel. Your Merc is very aerodynamic and probably weighs half as much.

I agree with all you say about weight and aerodynamics, the issue is the quoted figure which in the case of this car is very misleading. I am getting 15 to 17 mpg which is below half of what is quoted. 30% sounds ok to me. in the case of Mercedes I can confirm that what I get in the real world is 10 to 15% lower to what is advertised.
I took car to BMW battersea and they said there is nothing wrong with it. in the process they lost computer plug cover. they left a scratch and they never washed it as they claimed. awful experience.

I appreciate everyones input but this is not going to go quietly. I may organise a trip to Munich to see what kind magic they will throw at me. I will keep you all posted.

best regards

Give the car a chance to break in. Don't base any judgements on an engine so new..... It's bound to be poor during the run in period but will improve a lot.

I mostly drive around town in fairly free flowing traffic and get low 20's which is what I was expecting. It would be great if the testing gave much better 'real world' figures.

This is my actual mpg over the last few months:

Proof that you can hit 40mpg if you can stay awake at the wheel!

I find this strange as I get around 32 town driving and have had over 40 on a run in my40d. If I drive really hard I can get it down to 28. I have had this car from new and it is now 2.5 years old. I am very pleased with mpg and will buy another at the end of the year. If In deed it is only doing 17 mpg, there is something wrong.

I had a 4.4 e53 that did more than 17 mpg.

My 4.6 is doing 15-16 local driving and about 24-25 on motorway driving. For a diesel those numbers are slightly off

I agree with touring - I find it odd too. I've averaged over 30 on my 40d. I've had it 18 months from new and its done just over 16,000 miles. My lowest is 27 and highest 36mpg

It is confusing to see such high differences between same engine. I have just done 10 miles in town from South London to near the Emirates Stadium. I have lost 3 notches on the fuel gauge. computer said 16.8 mpg.

BMW should stop not mention precise engineering.
