It's a tank of 'Urea' (and yes that fluid is pretty much what it sounds like....) mandated on US diesels and is to control Nitrogen compounds in the exhaust as these cause smog in hot climates.

The handle is as described - emergency release for the parking brake or transmission (in the event of a nerffed battery).

As above apart from the 2011+ X6 (not sure about the X5) parking brake can not be released that way and needs to be done from under the car by removing a grommet and a special "dealer" tool. If you pull the rubber cover out from the front cup holders and remove the blanking plug you will see there is nothing under there now to use the tool on.

Reading more of the manual and not just the first bit I came across  it's multifunction - the diesel, and the park/handbrake. So I would have thought everybody would need one!

Like when changing the wheels......or towing the car (I had my towing eye go missing off the X5 after it was trailered into the dealer, and the wheel nut tool 'vanish')....... >:(

Just checked my manual and the tool does both jobs- use one side of it for the handbrake release and the other for Park release.
[/quote]

yeah you need that tool, my cuz 3.5d didnt start, the tool takes the car into natural, (under the cup holder is where your find the slot) you need to use the metal part og your key to undo a plastic holder and then pop the tool in the slot and twist :-) massive noise and the car is in N.

We needed this as the car had to be winched onto a flat bled as the AA give it a jump and blew the DME!

Just got my E70 40d yesterday and it does NOT have the red tool. Checked the manual and it is only for topping up AdBlue for a 30d with blue performace. There are now dedicated pull loops in some compartments for releasing stuck park and handbrakes. Mystery solved.  :nerd:

I wondered the same......maybe it will be part of Euro VII approvals.

Certainly the US/North Aerican (& Australian?) market X5 & X6 diesels have this stuff in order to get through the emissions regs in that part of the world.  It's quite possibly one of the reasons behind the very limited range of modern BMW diesel powered cars in the US (no 40d there as an example).  California in paricular has very strict controls.  If you run out of fluid the car won't start!
