Ahh the joys of 'Data from the DVLA'

You have reminded me that the logbook for my X6M50d says it is an X6, 7 series M Sport !!!

No.  These went on at around 18k. Car sold with nearly 41k and still had a good few miles in them.

Know a reasonable amount about load ratings as I look after the tyres for the van and when sourcing winter tyres i needed to make sure they were right.

I think the main changes are the construction of the tyre and how many ply (the cords that makes up the tyre) and the construction of the ply.  From memory they are a mix of steel and fabric belted with a load of around 1600kgs per wheel.......certainly makes you think more about even loading when you know this too

Ok, just checked the plate in door frame and doesn't show option for 18" wheels. What are the requirements for the 18" on the X5?

according to the plate on the inside of the door, the X6 requires a load rating of 107 V XL on 255/50/19 tyres.  I have the 255/55/18 tyres fitted with a load rating of 109 V XL.  I assume this is a higher load rating than required so would like to think alls well but probably need confirmation what the 18" load rating is on the X5 and that a higher load rating is not also illegal?

The only 18" tyre size & rating I can find for the X6 (on RealOEM) is 155/90R18 113M for Summer Tyres.  And those are non-RFT Contis only.

But no 18" rims are listed for the X6 by either BMW or 3rd party OEM wheel suppliers, nor are they on the plate on my car either, and the official other combos are all 19-21", which begs the question that are 18" wheels really suitable? 

I don't know the answer, but it raises an interesting point.

Cheers Richard, I would like to know what the X5 plate says, I'm assuming its going to be 107 V XL. I do intend to get the 19" wheels later in the year.

E70 18" tyres are 109H according to the BMW on-line parts catalogue.  Looks like you have the right load index with a higher top speed rating......which is right coz we all know the X6 is faster....

Hehehe!  . Couple of jealous X5ers will be along anytime fighting their corner, with their square exhaust arguments from their square minds.

I always aim to buy tyres that have the same load index and speed rating specified by the manufacturer, ie. 109H XL for my X5. I like to feel that the car handles and rides in the way that the manufacturer intended, except for run-flats!

However, I'd have no qualms about fitting tyres with a higher speed and/or load rating. I don't see how an insurance company or anyone else could have a problem with that.

I also don't see how a higher load rating can contribute in any way to handling problems leading to an accident, or making it harder to avoid an accident.

On my other car, I've fitted winter tyres which have a much lower speed rating that the car is capable of, however it is the speed rating recommended by the manufacturer. I also considered fitting tyres with a maximum speed 4mph less than the theoretical maximum, on the basis that I'm never going to drive at that speed.
