Luckily my mileage is about 8k so not ridiculous. Anymore and I would have to seriously think about selling the beast.
@ Raj and Cannondale, both lovely cars

I miss the sound and the look of the car, but the gearbox was shite, the fuel consumption dire and to be honest my previous mapped 3.0D seemed as quick.
This is the exact sentiments that i feel in terms of the 4.8is Mogsyman, it must have been nice having one so new & such low mileage though, your car history is very impressive & your current fleet not bad either!!
All i can say is you have a good eye for quality motors ;)

Thanks

Mine was an ex-BMW management car and from memory I paid £46k for it (listed at mid £60's i think) it was 10 months old, 2700 miles on the clock and it was absolutely as new. I was fortunate enough to have the money to play with such a thirsty engine for a year and I travelled all over europe. I even managed 150mph on a motorway in europe and initially had some real fun in it. The drive was really good and precise as you'd expect, interior lovely and the kids loved it. However, the benefit in kind was absolutely a killer and was eyewatering to see how much the government took from my salary every month.

As I mentioned, from memory 3rd to 4th was always a clunk, thump, wallop or whatever and in general the gearbox was appauling (BMW did have a look, but could find no fault). The fuel consumption over that year was 18.6mpg so not too bad (it spent most of the day on a motorway for my year of ownership), but when I went to London low teens would be seen and 200 miles from a full tank would often the case with town and local driving (a full tank was £90 back in those days). I was on first name terms with my local shell garage and owned a complete set of crystal glasses!

The interior and exterior was little different to the Le Mans 3.0D which is without doubt the better buy. The 4.8 was simply a way of sticking two fingers up to those who dislike 4x4's

I sold it a year after buying it for mid £30's so I lost £10k in a year which was amazing and then moved onto a 535D M Sport which was simply in a different league to the X.

Mogsyman why was the 535 in a different league? That was my other choice over the is.

Bearing in mind this was in '07...

Much better delivery of POWER, that diesel engine is a work of art
Interior was a nicer place to be in
Comfort seats with loads of adjustment
POWER
idrive and comms were light years ahead of the X (iPod integration for example)
Boot seemed as big as the X and more secure
POWER
early 30's hooning around, near 40's on a cruise fully loaded - can't argue with that mpg
Very fast and quiet cruiser
Brilliant 'SAT' (sports automatic transmission) with flappy paddles - lightning fast gear changes in sports mode and the box didn't appear to be fighting the engine all the time
DMS'd POWER - made the car even better :D

The 535D is probably one of the best all round family cars on the market today. The E60 was great, the LCI being a much nicer place to be in (as is the X5 I'm sure). The F10 535D is a very acomplished car and would certainly be on a 'very probable' list if I were going down that route again.

I'm sure there's more!

Great car, great colour, great engine and newer gen interior. How could you not like this car.

I've seen the newest ones and one round my way in MSport spec and also grey, I'm in love....

Think the new ones have a good engine spec too???

Mogs, gotta ask - was this your actual car that got featured? Could be a dumb question, nursing a hangover, ignore me otherwise (most do).

Yep, was my car.

Spent a day having it photograhed and then a day at the testing track at Chertsey.

Expenses paid with a nice lunch - and of course a memory of the car in print ;)

Mogs, not only great taste in cars, but a celebrity in autocar circles! Having my car featured in a magazine has always been something that has really appealed to me, bet it was a great experience, you lucky man!
