LLO4 magnetec sounds like engine oil to me. i would check this out with the oil supplier/dealer asap.
but the garage who changed it should have spotted it if they were any good.
however, bmw do tend to sell oils in plain bottles ive noticed..

I've googled it and it is engine oil but I fetched the fluid from the dealer in my own containers and it was red oil they gave me, engine oil ain't red! But my mechanic wasn't to know wot colour the correct fluid was coz BMW supplied it! I even gave them the green sticker number on the bottom of the pan! I need to ring them ASAP!

benxwyatt: my humble apologies, for some reason i assumed you had a 6 speed ZF autobox like my own, for which i stand by my comments on this thread as i've done plenty of research on this box.
as yours is the GM (5 speed??) then i have to say i have no idea about it and what oils it requires. other members might have knowledge and their input might still be correct though.
i thought all x5's had sealed for life auto boxes requiring expensive oil. i would call a couple of different dealers and see what they quote, just to double check.. :)

Sealed for life is indeed what they are....but the term 'life' is shall we say, open to debate.

There are a number of oils listed on Xoutpost, but I can't tell if they're available in the UK. Colour seems to vary with manufacture. Some are straw coloured while others are pink.

Is this chart for the transmissions and oils of any use?

There is a special oil for the 5 speed box, and it is expensive. when i changed mine the dealer needed to know the colour of the sticker on the oil pan to get the correct type. think the specification starts LM something

This is the correct long life oil for the car
We have stocked this oil for years and many other Indys buy this from us

All BMW auto boxes from 7/97 use long life old in the Europe

I would ask for what they have said in writing

Then ring BMW customer help line or ask to speak to the director of the company as he will be in the kept dark about the as always

I`d do this. If they are so confident they supplied the correct oil, they will put it in writing.

IF they`ve supplied the wrong oil and it causes gearbox issues, that won`t be cheap !
