Be very careful. I would advise against making any false declarations especially if traceable.

Often those with blatant disregard for traffic laws and insurance etc have little or no boundaries with other actions if even slightly provoked.

Sometimes in life it's about winning the war & not victorious battles.

It can be good to sleep at night without listening for every sound outside or downstairs

Well there's a surprise! All you can do now is to force the Police to press charges for uninsured driving, and providing false details. Might even be banned driver as well. Hence the 'fix it if you can' advice. You'll need to provide a witness statement and description of the driver under caution - very straightforward process. I know, I've done it a few dozen times for different offences.

They're going to send me a report form to fill in....plus the mrs said the officer was reading (to himself) for a few minutes so ther must be significant history...hence as you say £fix it yourself

Just be careful /mindful if ofending driver has your home address details if if given after the collision.

Maybe ask officer honestly if pursuance of action against this individual could be likely to yield more hassle to your good selves than you may be prepared to tolerate.

no details were given of our car or address....will consider what you've said too as yes...as much as this hurts it's not written off so I can thank my lucky stars and perhaps move on

Gutted for you Mike. It is very annoying when this kind of thing happens. Unfortunately as others have said, if they already well known to police and the like then there is not much more you can do but get it repaired yourself.

As ever, very helpful advise given by all above and I feel for you Mike but more so your wife, a brave lady indeed.

To be honest if this happened to me I would be well pi$$ and would feel the same way as you However the best thing to do is to treat the damage as if it happened in a car park and you had no idea who did it. Pay for the repair yourself and forget all about it. If the driver had been insured properly you would now be going through all the insurance hassle/paper work having to get the 'X' repaired at the Insurers own bodyshop and then suffering the insurance premium hike next renewal.

By doing this repair your way it gets sorted twice as fast and by a bodyshop of your chosing with minimal hassle. Yes I know this is not how it should be, all us genuine owners/ drivers pay our insurance every year without fail and expect the same of others but this is the real world and it sadly does not work that way

I'm not sure what lessons can be learnt here. Even if you had access to MID (not that you should use it legally) via your web phone and ran a check....would you instantly hit 999? Always take a picture without question right away would be a good one...even if you do it stealthly to capture the plate, the car, the damage, the driver's face.

I live 5 miles to the east of Manchester....Droylsden in fact but that's as near as I will say. As I said yesterday the good old rain and muck has disguised the damage. I'm surprised the panels show no movement, distortion, flaring or jaunty angles....the I would be mega p!ssed. I can live with scuffs and chips as it looks visually OK and can wait until I save up. Paint shop tips would be nice if one knows of one round my ways...when the cash is free......thatnks you again
