dont want to sound like a kill joy but by the time you have bought the van, paid all these extra fuel and wear costs on the car from towing, then paid site fees and shat in a bucket would all that money not pay the hotel fees for about a lifetime?? dont want to sound cheaky just ive always wanted to ask some caravaners that.. hey each to their own i mod my car and thats not to everyones taste just wondered really?

In a bucket? The sites have all the mod cons these days. You just bring your own room....

Part of the answer is the cost of taking luggage by air if travelling. 20kgs per person can be a struggle for a two or three week break and the excess charges on some airlines are astronomical. It's not unusual to see excess charges of £50 a kilo, although some charter companies allow the pre-purchase of additional capacity for very reasonable prices.

Please I mean it entirelly light hearted with no offence just where I live every summer there is an invasion of 1000s and I've always wanted to ask that! Also when I go past caravan place some of the smallish looking ones have 16k+ price tags so seems like a more expensive hobby than owning an x series bmw so to combine the two....omg!

I don't 'caravan' too regularly,.. but I do own a nice twin axle. For me it's the convenience of one phonecall to the site owner to see if there's any space to pitch up,.. then its hook up and go. You have all your own personal gear with you,.. no 'bag searches' at customs,.. no queuing at check-in, no other personell to deal with to spoil your break, and no hellish money exchange rates.
UK is a beautiful country if you look in the right places,.. oh and when you arrive on site you can choose your own living room window view !!,... preferably high up on a hill overlooking a nice scenic bay or beach.

My response was meant in a very light hearted way.......honestly..

I must admit that driving to SW Wales in the summer then we're likely to meet a few too.......not that an X6 40d will stay behind them for very long.....
The twisty road might add the odd challenge to that though..

HA HA!! Fair enough question so here's your answer.

I don't fancy queing and being herded round like sheep for 2/3 hours at a crowded overpriced airport, full of people in new trainers seeing how fast they can get to the bar at 6.30 in the morning to start getting pissed 'coz we're on 'oliday'. Also when you finally arrive, after being ripped off for the taxi death ride from hell, you have to sleep in somebody elses bed and shit in somebody elses bucket.

I prefer to sleep in my own bed and shit in my own bucket in my own caravan thanks. Trouble is I've also got to empty the bucket........not my favourite job I must admit. But as you say each to their own. I also mod my other car so I don't think there's much hope left for me.

We very rarely go to proper a site as we mainly use our caravan for attending dog agility competitions with our 3 dogs, usually staying on showgrounds or fields in the middle of nowhere. A remapped 3.0d X5 pulls our 1300kg van really well. On the motorway just stick the cruise on at just under 60, sit back and enjoy the ride. I haven't yet come across a road or hill while towing with the X5 that it didn't cope with easily.

To answer the original question I get approx 25 mpg while towing.

Anyway, there's your answer mate and I suppose all these people going abroad is keeping thousands of airport/airline workers in jobs.

nice reply, but when you say you mainly use your caravan on non proper sites and something to do with dogs, your not using it for seedy meet ups in laybys are you isnt that dogging agility!!

I get loads of ribbing at work, especially if we get a new driver in and someone usually shouts 'YOU DOGGING THIS WEEKEND AL?' I then have to explain that I actaully run around a field showing my Labrador which obstacle to take next and not being a bit of a perv.
