Re: brake pads 4.4 facelift
i replaced my front pads a month ago with pagids, Now you mention it... i forgot to coppergrease the backs as i would normally do.
however, i have no squeals or extra dust to speak of so far..
The dust on mine is very minimal.....not epic coal mine volume....more a very thin coating but then again I do 50 miles a day, evry day. I probably make it worse somehow by polishing the wheels and making them dust magnetic. It does come off easy though
Never had a problem with the pads or discs bar the latest non pedal pushed itsy bitsy squeek/ Dis wear shows no sign of grooves or ridges and is uniform colour

Cheers for the reply Mike. Will have to take each on mine out and give them a good coating of copper grease or the like.

Good luck....tis a very quick job on the fronts. Worth a try...but that damn grease and brake dust doesn't give a good skin and finger nail look
The trolley jack was the best investment I ever made. Clambering into the back for the BMW jack is more effort than doing the brakes themselves.
Emptying the junk out of the boot, proping it open...fiddling with the bungee that holds the BM jack..the coalminers crawl to reach....the threat of it dropping off the jack....and putting it back....no brainer...apart from the bit of decking under the wheels of the jack to avoid imprinting into the tarmac drive

dunno....none of my brakes had em, wouldn't they drop out of the outer pad gap anyway? None shown on realoem save for bmw magic snake oil paste
Cars of old had them..thin sheets of metal. Never understood how they worked at all. Maybe they created a slip surface of some sort...dunno

I suppose if it aint broke don't fix it may apply.
However as I said above I think the last set (brand unknown) that were on went wonky somehow. I didn't fit them and I think they stopped working smoothly, perhaps jamming or getting snagged in the carriers. One disc had a noticebale rust line of about 10mm around the outside edge where you'd expect the pad to sweep the whole surface. The pad didn't have chunk missing though but I was getting wobbles under high speed braking. This was enough (the 10mm rust line and the wobble) made me take a chance and change the whole lot out. It could have been bushes that made it wobble as others have reported but in this case it wasn't. Paranoid about any jamming or even as a placebo effect made me do it clinically and copper it to death.
Love my pagid set up...all 4 corners too. Got mine when ECP had 30% off for the royal wedding as apart from the normal 25%
Keeping my eye out for a Queen Lizzie jubilee special discount..you never know

Re: brake pads 4.4 facelift
oh and another thing
It seems that the caliper can be split without fully removing the sliding guide pins so long as they've come out of the threaded holes.
When I did mine I pulled them right out. I noticed that the very end near the thread had a hardened on crust of cr@p. Obviously this is because they're exposed at that end. I polished (not scraped) the crud off. If it's a slider...it should slide. Took a while to gt it off with autosol
This time I again pulled them out fully....no crud...so I'd done a good job. My guess is that they'd never been pulled right out since new. Didn't grease the slider pins though as that's apparently a no no
my 2p worth

Re: brake pads 4.4 facelift
tbh I'm no stranger to taking a car apart so it's all good. Appreciate the posts though Mike (and sorry for the thread hi-jack). Will sort the brakes once I've replaced all the brakes on wifey's car first as that just failed it's MOT. Also replace the exhaust too....lol
Then will sort the squeal and get the rear wheel bearing done also on the X.

I guessed you were....just thought I'd air my experience, especially when the default answer to wheel wobble seems to be arm an bush replacement.
Anways...a bit of coppergrease makes a change from just polishing it
