I find this very strange, I have a 40d SE and get 30 around town and 37 on a run.
Two weeks ago I went to Anglesea (110 miles) and averaged 40.5.

The car is jut over a year old now and 6,500 miles, the fuel consumption has always been the same,
my previous e53 4.4 did around 14-16 so I am more than happy.
Bloody hell did you push it to Anglesey ! :o

I'd be delighted to get anything above 30mpg in mine downhill with the wind behind me !. I think BMW should be ashamed of the figures they publish. I have not heard of anybody getting proper use from the e70 and achieving anything like the figures BMW say. My brother has a 530d and he has the same problem. The BMW figures are simply not realistic at all.

I looked at the Range Rovers before buying my X5 and thought the consumption figures were poor, but at least Land Rover are upfront and tell you the car will guzzle fuel. The X5 is no better than a Rangey on fuel in my experience. A bit disappointed with BMW on this front. Besides that its an awesome car so all is forgiven BMW !

It's no good blaming BMW for declaring the results they get on a rolling road in a controlled environment. They are far from alone in the unrepresentative fuel data. The mandated test simply isn't realistic, and even the DfT agree. The EU just isn't really doing anything about correcting it yet. Until 2015 we're all going to be fed bullsh!t about the consumption data...... :x

It's a bit like the adverts which say 85% of people agree that product 'X' is the best.........and then the small print says out of 112 people asked. Hardly a decent sized sample or valid declaration in a real world situation, although factually correct with the limited test data used.

I have the 3.5sd and have quite shocking fuel consumption figures. Average around 26mpg which is largely A road & dual carriageway driving. Was a real shock coming from my old E53 where I used to get around 31mpg.

That is what they do

As soon as you introduce any stop start traffic it kills it

I've been ploughing the motorways this week and was getting 30

Soon as you come off on to smaller roads it plummets!

There seems to be a common theme developing around the 35d as the same is being reported on the X6 version with it too. I wonder if that's why it was so quickly replaced with the 40d and 8-speed box?

I see ZF have now launched a 9-speed FWD auto to complement their 8-sp RWD/4WD transmission that is popping up all over the place. It's getting closer to a CVT all the time! My first auto had 3 forward and 1 rev gear!

All I can say is what I have found, I can and do achieve the fuel figs, but I could drive like an idiot and get less!

I do not want out and out performance, rock hard suspension or any more points!

6.5 sec 0-60 is fine, I don't drive with my foot flat to the floor but I don't hang around either.
I will admit that my wife had a 120d convertible and that was very poor on fuel.

Really! I thought our 120i was poor, always thought we should have bought a diesel equivalent (appreciate having to stick with an auto will always kill the economy)...
