That's a bit excessive, but the 3.0d M57TU engine does, and should use oil according to BMW. Mine used to use about 0.5 litre every 1,500 or so until it got to about 18,000 miles then it almost stopped. The newer N57S engine in the X6 never uses a drop. But that may also be connected with emissions requirements now.

Have you changed your crankcase breather? If the leak returns then it's worth checking there isn't cr@p blocking it. The early foam ones are not good and a few if us have replaced them with the current 'vortex' design.
