You will lose all your calendar items on the iPhone for some reason I found.
Still got all my calendar entries ;)

The update process start to finish should take about an hour BUT it does depend upon how long it takes to reload everything from a backup. If like me you have ripped movies on the device (iPad Mk1) then that takes a whole lot longer.

I also found it was better to download the whole update file (turn your anti-virus off or it might fail) and then do the update. Kaspersky AV has a nasty habit of faulting the downloads from Apple at the last 20kb and trashing the whole 700MB download! I always turn it off first now.

I got mine :P All seems good, Siri is pretty cool....I asked it "what is the answer to life, the universe and everything" it responded by displaying a Wolfram Alpha page about the number 42

All done, seems it got itself stuck on the backup stage.
Cancelled it then started again, about 45 mins later and all good :D

Sorry to hear that. It's a great phone, although mine is going to be exchanged when they get another one in on Weds - intermittent failure of the mic ie people can't hear me when I call. A friend of mine is driving me a bit nuts by using Siri to write his text messages without checking them - gobbledygook half the time!

IOS5 - what do you think?

Post by ITBarbie » Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:15 pm

I love my 4s as its so much quicker :-) Siri i'm a bit disappointed with as sometimes it interpretation of words is off key to say the least! When I speak texts and say Penny at the end it always writes any!! In the end I just spell out Penny and that works. They need to add other voices for the talkback though as that man's voice is just weird!

It's brilliant if your watching for the calories of food though as it seems to know the answer for anything I ask fat related!!

The mic is a known issue - needs a phone change as it's an internal fault.
The system cache will self-clear without asking - handy as it's not backed up!! It also stores app program data so beware!! :x
Siri adds 'pet names' to VCards and sends it to all your friends if you're not careful. No getting the phone to call you Master or Mistress or............... :o
Beware of 'Find my Friends' - you may not like the data it brings back. Someone has reportedly discovered his wife was playing away - :o :o

On the good side, at least the earlier aerial issues on the 4 have been sorted. :D

I saw a report this morning that the IOS5 update increased the network traffic across BT's infrastructure to 80Gb/s on Friday evening. The highest ever recorded for the UK. It was only down to 70GB/s on Saturday.

And that is Bytes/sec not Bits/sec. That's approx 687Gbps continuous. Most modern PCs operate with a 1Gbps Ethernet link capability and never get anywhere near the max unless connected to a local device that can handle the traffic, and even then only in short bursts.

No wonder everything was slow and doing the upgrade 'on the night' took forever or failed for so many. 4 million 4GS phones were sold in the markets where they were released, twice as many iPhone4's in the same period. Kerching!! Want one now? Hard luck, there aren't any!

IOS5 - what do you think?

OS5 updates are ok nothing too amazing but I am missing jailbreak apps to make it real useful once again. (lockinfo although new intelliscreenX looks cool, tlert, sbsettings, mywi)

I haven't been too impressed with the 4S but mainly because the battery life has been pissing me off, took it back to apple after the first week for them to tell me there is no hardware fault and maybe I should turn some services off (what like the phone maybe, that will help). Finally though they have admitted its an OS5 bug and to be fixed in 5.0.1 look forward to it. Note doesn't seem to effect everyone and different workarounds seem to work for some people. Not me.

I got my first 4s replaced no problem - mic issue. However, replacement was also faulty first due to my not being able to hear the other person, and then it also developed the same mic issue as the first. Now on my third which seems to work fine, and the battery life is a bit better. I also got the micro sim changed at the same time just in case that was the issue. O2 have been very efficient throughout and the exchanges have been very straightforward. Still looking forward to the update to provide better battery life....

Looks like the manufacture process has been rushed and the software not tested fully.

I got my 4s a few days ago, fair play to Orange, ordered it and had it delivered in 2 days. Gladly so far I'm not experiencing any of the problems you've all listed here and I have to say I'm quite impressed with it, the screen quality is mind blowing compared to my 3GS and cant believe how quick it is! Not played with Siri yet, haven't had time so we'll see how it goes.
We're fast becoming the Apple family I'm afraid to say, next on the list is Apple TV and I just need a very small excuse to get an iPad to add to the iPhones and Macs already in the house!
I need to get out more..........
