Let me put this in your ears... Please bear in mind I am a complete novice to the X but have a lifetime of experience on the P38 Range Rover, which, to those not in the know, also has air suspension. Built at a time BMW owned the company, the likelyhood is they are common parts and systems. To that end I would diagnose a worn hight sensor. These are in effect variable resistors, feeding back varying voltages depending on the load on the suspension. What can happen is as the suspension spends all its time covering a small arc of movement, the tracks on the sensors can wear and give of the same reading over that arc. Therfore despite the suspension being higher or lower than it should, the sensor is effectivly giving of the correct reading so the Ecu does nothing about it. Result = wonky car ! Some people have reported some success swapping sensors over from left to right and re-calibrating, but the best results are from fitting new sensors.

Pleased to hear that you have managed to level up the car. Having done so, will it be necessary to get the tracking adjusted?
I've noticed that the left of my X is sitting a bit low (c.1.5cm). I had uneven wear on the last set of front tyres (comparing left to right) - I had the tracking checked and this didn't show up any problems, so am now wondering whether it is down to the self levelling suspension.
