As usual I won't mention my software/setup.

But an AppleTV and some clever trickery gives me some pretty good search options and viewing pleasure (and no, not just the porn)!!!! All thanks to my mate Jeegnesh - he has to pay me back somehow! :))

Slightly off-topic, so..... :sorry:

Anyone using a Mk 2 Airport Express by any chance?  We're off on hols in a few weeks time and the hotel has cabled Ethernet but no WiFi (except by the pool) for Internet access.  As we will be taking iPads with us, that's not a huge amount of use as we're 10 floors up and the wireless doesn't reach unless one leans over the balcony and adopts a strange contortionist position.  As a Gold Card holder I'm supposed to get free Internet in the room - but no WiFi means that's of precious little use!

What I'm wondering is whether anyone has tried taking an Airport Extreme and connecting that to a hotel system so you have your own personal wiFi station in the room?

I understand the Mk2 version is easy to set up on everything including IOS devices, and the manual suggests this can be done so I'm just wondering if anyone here has?

I downloaded handbrake, so conversions are sorted, but now for ripping software.
As more and more dvd's use copy protection, what are you lot using?

Also, as I think of it (promoted by X5sport's post above) I need to ' extend' my wifi to reach the garage. My current bt router doesn't quite reach, so am looking to add a repeater or extender to the original wifi network (I would prefer not to have to wire anything in as I would need to add a switch or hub as I have used the 4 on the router already), again, any suggestions?

Thanks all.:D

Trial version of AnyDVD will let you test it......for 21 days.

As far as extending your wireless coverage goes I found that a simple extender would not work on my encrypted network.  Even ones matching the router just will not play!!  I don't know why as the settings used were as per the books but to no avail.  Security 'Passthrough' just would not function properly.  The system worked fine if no encryption was used but I'm not operating an 'open' WiFi system thank you very much.....

So what I now have is a mains-borne network connection via three Netgear HomePlug AV500+ units and a wireless repeater on the end of one route.  I'm getting speeds of up to 285Mbps over it with no problems (enough to stream at Blu-Ray quality).  You do need to watch for possible issues if running on a 3-phase supply as the signals can't jump the phases - but most folks won't have that issue.  There can also be issues between certain circuits off the same circuit breaker board as circuit breakers can occasionally cause a loss of signal, but with trial and error it can be made to work.

The system is very simple.  One of these units plugs in to any free mains socket close to your network router etc and a network cable runs between the two devices.  Somewhere else in the house you plug another unit into a socket and connect a network cable to it.  That cable in my system goes to a wireless base station which also has a 4-port hub in it so I get wireless and network ports in one go.  The two power line units are encrypted and only talk to each other (you can configure them from a PC too if you want to change things).  The system also allows additional mains units to be plugged in too - I have one in the kitchen for HRH's TV.

Some people get very hot under the collar about potential interference from these things, but I have not had any trouble so far (I am also a Radio Ham) and none of my neighbours have ever reported issues either.  Rest assured that the data signal cannot 'leave' your premises as it cannot get out past the electricity meter.  You are safe from intruders anyway as the data link is encrypted.

Just another option....and it uses your existing house wiring.  There are some devices now that come with a 13A socket on them to replace the one used by the device, and even multiple network ports.  I have even seen a version with replaces a double wall socket plate with a single socket and 4 network ports - one of which can go to your wireless access point device.

That was my next option for extending, just means getting a switch at the router end to give me the spare port. Could also do with a second switch or hub for the TV end too as with the DVD, XBox and future TV via apple box connected my old 10/100 hub just won't do.

Thanks for the help, saved me messing with the whole security thing which I know can be a pain. :D

Haven't tried it. Are you going to configure it in bridge mode? Seems like it should work!

Haven't bought it yet, just wondering what is possible before committing.  Folks on the Apple Forums seem to indicate it is possible but a lot of the threads are quite 'old' and with new hardware and new supporting apps being around I'm not 100% certain.  Also waiting for the Hotel to confirm that what I think I should get, is indeed the case.

Mind you, I can always use it here just for the iPads as it has 5GHz as well as simultaneous 2.4GHz 'N'.  Good for iPads...and iPhones at the same time but on different networks.. :)

Hotel have now confirmed that we get free Internet for the duration of our stay, and the Airport Express arrived this morning.  Really neat little package and now working perfectly in 'Bridge' mode on our LAN.  Took a bit more than 5 mins to set up as it appears that despite indications that it can be done on an IOS device, it actually needs a PC (with at least Windows 7 SP1) or a Mac for a lot of the clever stuff.  Once done though, the rest can be updated on an IOS Device.  If folks want to add wireless coverage, or just increase it then I would offer this as a definite candidate device.
