Hi Penny,

As others have said it can be a simple explanation and not too costly.

I'll await Fridays evaluation but had something similar on my previous 530d. You mentioned the turbo couldn't be heard as normal at one point but then seemed ok afterwards? I don't want to feed paranoia but mine turned out to be a knackered turbo as the vanes started to spin off axis. As I said please don't panic as it can be something very simple but just thought I'd mention it.

Raj.

Thanks Raj I have been reading about possible vane damage on the turbo. My glass is always half empty! Lol

LOL, I am really hoping it isn't too bad and not the turbo, but if it is then hopefully you will catch it early enough. Mine was like this for a couple of weeks before one of the vanes broke off when the bearing finally went caput. The broken vane found it's way into the intercooler and added to the cost as that had to be replaced also. If it just turbo replacement then the costs won't cause the half empty glass to smash but may only empty a little more.

Fingers crossed it is something far more simple.

White smoke

Post by ITBarbie » Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:55 am

Your not going to believe this but hey I'm blonde :-)

AW8 and I obviously share something in common as I was fearing the worst with the car.

Got a call from the garage and they can't find anything wrong re smoke but....... Guess what? There was the remnants of a White carrier bag melted to part of the exhaust which they believe accounts for the smell, the White stuff and the fact that thats why I probably didn't see it yesterday or the night before as it had all but shrivelled and melted!!!

Honest to go I did look but it ain't easy looking under that thing! They also diagnosed that annoying noise I heard every now and then when the brakes were applied. Apparently there was some play in the pads. Probably due to the fact they were pattern parts. Looks like I'll replace them as that blasted awful squeal annoys me to.

All sorted :-)

Call it pessimism, cynicism or just realism....I often expect the worst & to avoid later disappointment

Glad all sorted though :)

Lol, got me singing that one now, thanks.

Glad it's all sorted and that the only real damage is to your cred :-p

At least that part of your exhaust is less likely to corrode over the winter, maybe you should do the whole lot.....

Anyway cheap fixes are always good. Enjoy the drive home.
