Just parted with £834 for my 4.8is.

A Derv was about £100 cheaper when I checked before I bought the car.

Paid swift cover £260ish fully comp on 4.8is but with huge excess. i'm 38 self employed and it's on driveway. I know there not the best company but I never claim anyway through fear of next 4 years premiums on 2 cars and 2 bikes. Live in Cornwall So that probably helps. My disco is £130 tpft with Adrian flux and zx12 & ccm tpft with ebike on dual policy for £125. On moneysavingexpert there is this thing where you put in your job and it gives alternate jobs that give cheaper cover. It consultant is cheaper if your a computer engineer if a tad less glamourous.

I wonder if this is due to the recently discovered major security flaw in a lot of newer BMWs?

Let's not blow that out of proportion. It isn't as easy as some would have you believe from reading the interwebs. There are a lot of scare stories around but in the 'real world' it needs some specialised kit to do even the easier of the alleged methods.

As an aside, I see Admiral have joined up with Warranty Direct to offer two types of fix it policy - crash & breakdown. They're trying to get us to buy one of each.... ;)

Maybe, but there's several lengthy threads on Pistonheads (and other respected motoring forums) where more than the normal number of stolen BMWs are reported, and it is trivial to defeat the need to use a key to start newer BMWs. The kit to do it is cheap and 'how to' videos are all over the place, although how they get into the car in the first place without setting the alarm off is a bit of a mystery (to me!).
Anyway, Thatcham are now 'reassessing' their ratings for newer BMWs, which means the insurance companies will too, if they haven't already.

It may go back to insurers bringing in the requirement that all BMWs made after a date to be decided must be fitted with a tracking device, and one of the more 'advanced' type that self activate even if you have the key but not certain 'other' essentials. I'm even more pleased I did not opt for the 'Comfort Access' system on any of mine as I thought that was a large hole in any security system.

BMW may need to toughen things up, but my guess is they aren't alone. Maybe I need to get my Stoplock out and brush the dust off it again.. :(
Thatcham ought to carry out these sort of tests by default as technology advances. Let's face it, this is a war where one side constantly seeks to defeat the other.

Closer to the original topic, there is an interesting comment about renewals in the UK this year generally. 20% of the premium you pay is now a direct result of whiplash injury claims. There were more then 570,000 last year and because there is no real test for it, and no minimum speed requirement (Germany has a minimum 10kph collision speed limit for claims) in the UK, UK Insurers just pay up as it can't easily be disproved. The UK is the easiest country to submit this type of claim in it seems. It's long since time that the rules about Ambulance Chaser Personal Injury Claims Companies were tightened up! I'm still getting texts for a no fault (of mine) collision more than 16 months back....and that's despite there being no injuries. :x

I just bought mine a couple of days ago but my insurance fully comp + Protected bonus (I have 10+ years actually I have 20+ years but they stop at 10 or 12) came up to ..... £411,18 no voluntary excess and £100 compulsory excess...
I am with Admiral multicar which as we all know is just a middle of the road insurance.
