Well I've been driving around all week and today I did a 200 mile run. No trouble at all. The odd thump into gear as before but nothing major.
27 mpg too..

I can confirm that zfs don't work with bits of metal missing..
Lost drive in the middle of Baldock an hour ago.
It's now on the drive waiting for a decision to repair or sell as is or whatever.
Don't know yet.

Do you think it could be the splined front driveshaft on these was prone to fail or definitely the gearbox ? :(

No I don't think so. Recent previous issues and it juddering and slipping within 5 minutes of losing drive would lead Sherlock Holmes to thwack Watson around the head with a newspaper exclaiming 'Elementary my dear Watson!'.

The wife just says sell it but she has no idea about vehicles - she just sees money and how much its going to cost to repair
A £500 pair of shoes is ok tho..

Do what i do get it sorted and say nothing about the cost to the wife.
I must admit i have good one as long as the cupboard's are full and bill's paid she say's nothing oh and her car is clean.

I'm leaning more to getting it fixed as its 20 years old and they are getting rarer.
I could just go and buy another vehicle but that would still leave me with the X5 to either repair or sell. I can't see it being worth much as it is now but with a fresh transmission the price jumps up.

I didn't realise it was loosing drive before though you only had a missing gear problem. It is only a parts car with no box now but if you intended to keep it see how much it will cost and them decide you could easily buy another the same but be buying a similar problem as they are all old now :driving:

£1800 + vat for full rebuild, rebuilt torque converter, adaptations reset, 12 months unlimited mileage warranty, follow on service. Recovery from my drive too.
It's being collected tomorrow.
Buying another similar SUV vehicle is going to cost at least twice that and that is for, like you say, an unknown.

Herts and beds transmissions in Letchworth. It's also the closest to me.
I was actually there circa 6 months ago talking to them about my transmission. Odd.

It’s still an ouch, but that’s not a bad deal by the sounds of things.
