I'm finding this all fascinating, the biggest engine rebuild I ever did was an XK Jaguar engine from a 3.8 Mk ll and that was a good few years ago.
Keep the rebuild story going it is great so far.
Best wishes,

Lez

Sorry for the late reply, all is back together but all is not well.

Finished rebuilding the engine and refitted it in the car, engine started up and runs nicely happy days.

Then decided I best put some oil in the gearbox, got a couple litres in then it starts pouring out the join between engine and gearbox, looking at realoem theres a lip seal on the input shaft, mine is either missing or damaged.

This all took place 2 days before I moved house, fortunately we only moved 2 doors up to the corner plot in our street so we pushed the x5 to the new house and parked it on gravel on the front and it's sat there since as I've been busy building a 100sqm extension including the double garage it will be going in to be repaired. Roof goes on the new garage in next couple of weeks so hopefully at some point in September I'll get the gearbox back off and see what's what but its on the back burner for now

Chris.

The wifes more sore about it than I am, these things happen when rebuilding cars and I've not had anytime to dwell on it

I had a head gasket split on a rebuild of a Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 engine. It went immediately on first start and right beside the main oil feed to the head. I was not a happy bunny. Had to strip the top down again (a lot simpler on those engines than it is today) and we (I had support from an ex-REME friend) reckoned it was a defect in the gasket rather than something I’d missed. Made a hell of a mess with oil spraying everywhere! I know I used a few choice words :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
