Like you I am new to the coding world. None of the rest of my fleet need such wizardry.
Anyway after the research I did, I bought the one below and downloaded the Bimmercode to my iphone. My ipad is too old to support it, apparently. I have gone for the free version, for now.
I have yet to try it but need to do so, so that I can fit LED sidelamps and dip beams.

I looked at that one, but it doesn’t support cars made before 2008 - and I have a 2005 E46 in storage. The E53 is also not covered according to bimmercode, only the E70 or newer.
They made a good point about ELM327 code tools, those only support 8-bit data and not 255-bit as used in modern cars.
