Funnily enough I bought the car with it on.
They told me all glow plugs were working correctly with right voltages.
If I had any more issues to bring it in.
No issues apart from torquey at low revs but I don’t think it would be related unless it’s cold.
Are you having it changed?

I also bought the car with this fault. I still need to do more research on the issue, but my initial findings are that it’s glow plug controller which needs replacing (around £90). It will be a bit of a job as you need to take of the intake manifold and a few extra bits, but I might have a go at this myself.

What is really strange is that there are now errors the glow plugs (need to check the voltage tonight).

Where are you based? Would be good to have some comparison on my 40d :-)

So I guess that may be my next error then.
I’m based in Yorkshire which maybe a bit far if your in the south.
Let us know how it goes once you changed controller if you decide to. I would change all glow plugs at once if your doing controller.  Hope it sorts your engine speed issue but it doesn’t really bother me apart from the fact that my other car feels smoother at low revs. However once it gets going it’s quite silent.

I think Yorkshire is a bit far from sunny Hertfordshire  :)

My car sounds exactly like to one in that youtube video - perhaps it's just normal. I did reset on the Lin bus error, but it came back straight away. Unfortunately I didn't see option in Carly to measure voltage on the glow plugs ... do you know how your garage did that?

Maybe some 4.0d owners of E70 or E71 can relate to video and let us know if that’s normal noise of this engine.

The garage tested voltages using a multimeter which is quite easy as it’s on YouTube how to do it. They said all glow plugs were giving correct voltages. In my case it’s probably the controller.

Bear in mind that if the glow plugs go faulty the DPF will not regenerate.  That means your exhaust will soot up and that means the engine cannot breathe properly.  You may have a DPF issue and that is causing your power issue.  You won’t get a DPF warning light until it’s well and truly sooted up, and you will need all 6 working correctly before a forced regen will run.  The cycles normally happen every 300-500 miles with the giveaway being all fans running on when you switch off or pull up at traffic lights - this is to stop the very high exhaust temp causing a fire!

I checked mine very carefully this morning and I have torque from right around 900rpm with plenty of pull up to the 2,000rpm point at which mine changes gear.  Even a light throttle will get up to 60mph without ever passing 2,000rpm.  Anything above 55mph with a warm engine will see the box drop into 8th.  A cold engine will hold 7th at that speed.  It only goes above 2,000fpm if prodded to ‘make progress’.

I think my Dpf would be working correctly as I did a dpf check on carly when it got to 42g soot mass. After 30 mins on the motorway the soot level went down to 12g.
However I found it difficult to force a regen using Foxwell when it said I had to clear the error codes before I can reset regeneration. So not sure it glow plug controller error is causing this or not. Will keep an eye on soot levels to see if they climb and go down when taken on motorway again.
I put my foot down today and although the speed increased it did feel that the car was running out of breath or punch unlike my F10 which pulls all the way, maybe the E70 weight had something to do with it I’m not sure. I think I need to drive another 4.0d for a test or get the dealer to test drive it.

No sport mode in mine, only on gear lever no button. I do find the steering very light which is a good thing but it doesn’t get stiff like in the msport sports transmission on my other car if you set it to sport.

I'm muddled a bit here!
Mine has a sport mode button behind the gear stick that hardens the suspension.

But if I push the stick to the left when in drive it goes into sport gear change mode  by holding lower gears longer (or by then moving the stick backwards or forwards it makes changes manually). Perhaps this is what Leslie meant?

Does the msport also have a button? Mine has no button near gear lever ? Maybe msport already has sport suspension built in?
