I might be wrong here so anyone please correct

As yours is the earlier mechanical transfer case - no electronics I think it might be a light weight ATF Dexron 111. Or try a goofing search on the BMW part no Moose04 quoted - might be a lead to follow up.
Checking my notes I’ve picked this up from somewhere- hopefully someone can confirm.

Did mine earlier in the year along with both diffs and a few other bits whilst the undertrays were off, the transfer case oil was cheap from Cotswold BMW - cheaper than the new plugs! - message them on here for a discount. Bits for mine were (2003 4.6is)

Well i think i have it sorted in my head lol.
I can get the oil and new washers for £20 and borrow my m8's ramp job done.(well it will be next week).
Anybody close enough to me wants the reset done i will gladly do it for them with my nt510 scanner.

Right - did the rear diff fluid change no problem, looked like it needed a change from the before and afters pics glad i did it:-

What the hell do you do to get the front metal splash guard off!!!!!

Choice Yorkshire dialect was used most of the morning !!!!!!

Please tell me you do not need to undo all the drivers side front wing plastic splashguards to get access to the F^&*ing 6  nuts that hold the steel plate on there not even captive and 4 of them hold the ARB on - surely not please

Gave up after pi$$ing around for a hour or so  - it must be simple and im missing the point -  somebody please tell me. ( not happy in case youd not guessed !!!!  >:( >:(

pics enclosed of spashguard under wing, i take it its the bottom part with 3 push fit plastic riverts and a  few M8 screws i really hope not )

The big guard withe flap in it ?.
If so then they have a nut on the inner side you need to get a ring spanner in there and it is heavy.
All the bolts need to come out.

The big steel guard is correct, two flaps in it , how the hell do you gat a spanner over the top to any of the nuts to hold it!!!

There no access to the nuts ???


I cannot fathom our unless you need to take the inner wing lower plastic shields off surely not ?

You can get to them not easy.
You have to go from the wheel side sort of.
My car was on a ramp don't know if yours is  but you can get to them just.
Stupid idea you will agree they could have made them captive.

See other post - but these bolts/nuts aren't really that hard to deal with but you DO need remove the small plastic side splash shields behind each wheel. Well, for five of the six bolts 0 the last one is accessed via the front access hatch in the reinforcement plate itself.

Got me thinking now i don't think i have the side plastic covers on mine.
Don't have the very front under tray the plastic one so it's possible the side ones are missing and i don't remember seeing them when my m8 took the metal tray off.

There's actually two plastic covers on each side - they are called "steering gear covers" - parts#5 & #6 in this diagram...





If you are just removing the reinforcement plate, then you can get away with only removing the upper cover on each side, therefore removing only one of the plastic trim retainers (and about 6-8 screws)

I was trying to shift it yesterday, 3 x plastic push fits holds it to the bottom subframe then 4 xscrews.

Bloody screws are locked solid so will free these off this week and then start a fresh on trying to do the diff next week if I get the screws sorted.

Cheers for all the help- it’s s right faff compared to my Shogun diffs .

Least I know the exact process now

You only need to remove the rear-most plastic push fit retainer to remove the upper steering gear cover. The other two hold only the lower cover.

I usually buy some new generic push fit retainers - I almost always loose one or two on this task....
