My understanding is it should pull a vacuum but it helps to operate other things as well like turbo actuators and such and as you don’t seem to have other problems then maybe it is a servo problem like Allen suggested

Positive pressure sounds completely wrong given all of the diagrams say ‘vacuum’, and you need a vacuum to make the servo operate correctly.  If the pump is putting out pressure rather than sucking it away then it would point at that being the probable cause.  Could be a seal or ‘O’ ring failure.

Newtis.info has the instructions.

If it is blowing then you have a problem i would say.
It must be the pump but i have not had one fail and blow instead.

Interesting!  What was it rubbing against?  That almost looks like there was either a routing issue or a missing clip?

I think  there's a missing clip as I only undone one on the back ,I will have to sort one before finishing it off.

Had this on our e46 325 - on that engine there’s a valve which is called the “sucking jet pump” which is basically a one way venturi valve which is attached to the end of the hard vaccuum pipe which feeds into the servo (runs under the scuttle). It’s a sealed unit made of plastic - and in ours, the top/lid had started to separate. When I touched it, it fell apart. Replaced that and it’s been fine ever since - it was falling apart gradually - so mostly had brakes and then occassionally didn’t! On the e46 m54 engine the valve is located by the passenger side of the engine - by the scuttle - think you’ll have a similar set upnon yours - is part no 1 on the m54 engine on the below diagram:
