Thanks guys. Just rang my local dealer (Chandlers)and they have the one you mentioned X5sport in stock for £181.81 +VAT (so £218.17 for most of us!).

I did wonder about connecting a trickle charge to the jump points under the bonnet before disconnecting the old battery. I presume I'd lose all manner of settings if I didn't?

Would the trickle charger be sufficient?

My CTEK has a 10A ‘supply’ mode which I used when changing the E46 battery (same size) and it was fine.  Change the battery with the car asleep and it doesn’t draw much.

Perhaps I should have made clearer my understanding that the computerised circuits should be kept alive with a 12v source  whilst the old battery is removed and the new one fitted.  I was told not to simply disconnect the old battery, remove it, then fit a new one. Following X5 Sport's contribution, I hope this clarifies the point?

Ahh ok, now I get what you meant.

That being said, changing the battery without a power supply connected isn't a problem either. You do get a load of check control messages come up for various modules, but they clear once you start driving. You don't need to clear them using a diagnostic tool, although you wouldn't be changing the battery if you didn't have such a tool, because you need to code in the new one.

<edit> Oh, and I don't remember losing any settings, other than maybe the date/time.

i sat in the car for about 15 mins yesterday after turning it off and i noticed that the cd or dvd player was making some noises. do you think this could be causing the battery discharge error?

Have you dvd based navigation ?

It does run for a bit after you switch off or unlock the car... It's normal enough.

I had the battery discharge issue but it was because my CCC was faulty (failed eventually)
