Bit late to this, but I was puzzled by the part in the image too. The outer handle is screwed in place via an access hole in the door edge. and it appears that this casting prevents the same hole from being used somehow to manipulate the mechanism when the door is closed. I haven't tried to break into my car, but its the only explanation I could come up with...

As it sits at the back of the carrier mechanism held in by a grub screw.  The part number is for the entire carrier mechanism.  It looks as if it points into the car as a guard as suggested.  Some form of anti-theft would be my guess too.

The images on this EBay offering show you where it goes.  I can't find any separate part referenced in Realoem meaning it's an assembly part and not available on its own.

Tiny pic isn't playing or I would have added it.  >:(

I carried out the same piece of work last week and removed the carrier unit, the lock handle, etc. multiple times and never came across that piece in the pic.
