Some main dealers (not just bmw) haven't got a clue about the way the cars should be maintained.
I think it's the majority now.  Cars are too complicated for the average 'technician' and so things just get changed at the customers' expense until they hit the right item  >:(

Even BMW 'life' their cars at just three years!
I totally agree. The car manufacturers are geared up for PCP and lease vehicles that are handed back at the end of the 3 year deal, then they are disposed of as baggage to the non dealership market.
It's sad that you can look to buy a 4/5 year old " Prestige " car and be paranoid about it going wrong and costing you thousands of pounds to fix it.

The problem with buying a 5.0i is that you would always wonder what an 'M' was like.

I've always liked powerful cars, but the truth of it is that I find it hard to even stretch my 3.0 d to its full potential without the risk/ fear of losing my licence.

You,could of course always look at and test drive both.........that will give a pretty good idea which one suits best!

i will test drive both for sure, i would go for a diesel but as its all up in the air about them and with the problems you get with dpf's i shall not bother..............which is a shame as there is more choice and ive just found out that there is a TRIPLE turbo-charged x5 diesel............that thing must have enough torque to jump-start planet lol

Tried it with the 40d and personally the M50d was just a little too 'brutal' in how it drives.  It is definitely one of those cars that will divide opinion.  It is a beast but I couldn't live with it as an everyday drive.

You have two in the X5M and I think they might even be twin-scroll versions.

Which translates to extremely seriously expensive repairs...even the twin on the 40d is certainly not cheap!

I can assure you the 50D is no beast or difficult to drive daily.

It's extremely docile in comfort and the 8 speed gearbox is a work of art. No jumping or thumping around and with 12000 miles on mine since new last September I'm very happy with it, no issues and I really enjoy driving it.

Knock it into sport and it changes character. Gears are a little thumpy and the engine revs right through to the red line very easily. It's pretty quick but nowhere near neck-snapping quick (albeit it does pick up speed quickly enough for a two-tonne barge). I tend to leave mine in comfort simply because if you put your foot down it goes well enough.

I recently took it to Le Mans and have also toured Europe on our skiing trip and it is an excellent place to sit in.

My only issue is the number of small stone chips appearing on the front of the rear wheel arch but I guess that's big fat wheels for you.
