Yes in theory you can do that, but once the battery charge states level out then it will stop. Only any good for a few minutes at most given that (for the Diesel X) the vehicle starter battery is a 110Ah and the booster pack is a mere 38Ah. That means current will flow out of the booster pack quickly but won't last very long. You may end up with two part charged and useless power sources.

ok, so on the basis that I cant use the jump pack as a charger can anyone give any recommendations on charger units too. I have the issue where over time the starter drains the battery - I don't want to replace the starter yet (purely for financial reasons) if I can top up the battery from time to time and replace in the starter in due course (when the battery will probably need replaced too)

I think pvr gave a recomedation earlier in this thread..........not sure what the current models are but the make he uses are reliable.

If they're good enough for BMW to rebadge and sell as their own, I can take a hint. Not that I bought a badged one when the OEM is half the price.

I did have a Halfrauds one, but it could not be left connected all the time. Somehow my wife 'lost it' between home and Wales last November. It was in the car when she started out, but wasn't there when she got home. Don't go there, it's possibly safer to chew wasps than try to work female logic out!

So I bought a 4003 from Amazon a few weeks back.

I would rather slice myself with razor blades and slide into a pool of lemon juice then be a man. You may not understand our logic as you are the inferior species. I mean you never remember to put the rubbish out or put the toilet seat down but you always remember a prior engagement when the mother in law visits.

Although i am a man, the toilet seat is something i always do in the bathroom......

Whenever you flush the chain, small droplets of water get thrown a couple of meters into the air, carrying particles of whatever you just left in there.....
The last thing i want to do is brush my teeth in s##t.

A couple of things. This week's Auto Express has a test on the 10 most popular Jumper Packs. The Clarke got knocked for not offering much at its price point, and for being heavy. It gained points for being able to start a truck though. When you look at the others that were reviewed, their batteries were all under 20Ah and therefore won't start the 'X'. So it looks like the Clarke is a good bet. I know you can get it cheaper than the price AE quoted of £107.99 though.

The other thing is that I got a complete copy of the 2008 BMW TIS today. One of the things it discusses is jacking up the E53 with a trolley jack. You absolutely must NOT jack up the rear via the diff but you CAN jack the front if you have the right centre plate as part of the front suspension. If you look under the car there is a large plate in the centre of the rear bottom wishbones, and if on your own X there is a jacking point sized rectangular recess embossed in the middle of it then you are allowed to lift by placing a rubber pad between the jack head and that point, and then lifting. So you can jack the front wheels off the ground in one go. The rear has to come up via the correct sill jacking points only. If you dont have the embossed rectangular recess then you must use the sill lifting points only both front and rear.
