Saw a report this week that suggests the U.K. Gov wants rid of Diesel engines in cars by 2030 and the scrappage scheme might offer as much as £8,500 as long as you buy electric.  It also suggested that new diesel cars might have a 1st year VED penalty if £800!

Interested to see what actually happens.

For commuting, I might go to a Tesla 3 next time....but only if they actually start being delivered and are any good.  I want to keep the X6 though.  Far too nice a place to be in on long haul trips...

I never looked at petrol models when I bought my E53 two years ago.

I do sometimes think it would have been nice to have a V8, the 3.0D has averaged 26.6mpg since I've owned it as I walk to work and my wife is currently at home looking after 3 young kids, so no commuting miles.

I think diesel has a limited shelf life as fuel for cars, coming from a forced induction tuning background I know the benefits of turbo or supercharging petrol engines, and with modern materials, smaller turbos can be manufactured enabling car makers to produce small engined cars i.e. 1.4l with the consumption of a small engine and the power of a 2.0l or more, negating the need for diesel of you want high mpg.

I'm not a fan of hybrids, and think time will prove they were at best a stop gap between fossil fuels and full renewable energy powered vehicles.
Have had a couple as hire cars through work and wasn't impressed with fuel economy, lowered than my 1.9 Passat TDI I had before I bought the X5.
That said I'm off to Le Mans next month to cheer on a Porsche team running hybrid technology.  :))
