would the problem be that the chain has stretched inside the transfer box, causing the chain to jump the cogs and that is the noise and jerky feeling at low speed/pulling off and when on full lock?

They are a lot more complicated than that these days, the Xdrive system incorporates gears and clutched and activators.
KKX5 repairs them for a living, so he's the man.

As Horizon said, its more complex then just a chain on f25.
