Dipstick or I drive
Re: Dipstick or I drive
I always check mine with the engine warmed up having been told by the mechanics who trained me that was 'the way to do it'.

Re: Dipstick or I drive
I did an oil change on the weekend, put in 7.6L which was max on the dipstick but showed overfilled in the i drive menu, sucked out 350ml via the dipstick tube and it now shows max & ok in the I drive menu and mid way on the dipstick.
A few reports online detail that mid way on the dipstick is correct so I'm happy that the sensor reports correctly. From what I see, the difference between max and min (I drive & dipstick) is 1L.
I checked using the Carly app and when the I drive was reporting over filled and the dipstick at max (7.6L), Carly showed 95% full, with 350ml removed Carly now reports 85% and I drive shows ok.
The I drive icon when showing overfilled fills in the top segment (and went amber) so 95% full seems fairly accurate, at 85% the last segment isn't showing and it reads ok with green segments.
All levels taken with the engine warm but stopped for 5 mins.

Re: Dipstick or I drive
When I collected my X5 today (with newly fitted driver seat base cover and foam
) I spoke with the Head Technician re. the iDrive telling me the engine oil is at maximum but the dipstick showing less that half way between MIN and MAX.....his response was ALWAYS go by what the iDrive tells you.....If you fill the engine to MAX on the dipstick you will cause all types of problems!
Crazy!
I'll stick to where it is now.....near half way on the dipstick.

Re: Dipstick or I drive
I watched a very good friend of mine change the oil on my E61 at the dealer he works at.
He just put an overhead pipe in the oil filler and pulled the trigger.
When I asked him how he knew how much to put in, he said that the service bay knows which car is in and the oil is metered out by the computer.
Followed with, and I quote "it prevents the yoghurts they employ here overfilling customers cars, causing problems I then have to fix"

Re: Dipstick or I drive
X5sport your totally right what is going on with these services.
We all pay a small fortune to these garages and they don't seem to give a monkey's.
Probably putting the measured amount of oil in but not changing the filter ie overfill im not saying it happens all the time but I think it could happen occasionally.

Re: Dipstick or I drive
Hi guys. Sorry to resurrect this "old" thread but I have the issue of iDrive saying too much oil. Checked the dipstick when engine cold and had been stood etc and it was bang on the max line - so I'm assuming I need to extract a bit?
Re tooling, can anyone suggest an appropriate syringe & pipe combo to reach down the dipstick pipe to pull some out?

Re: Dipstick or I drive
If the dipstick says its ok id leave it alone if it was me as 1/4 litre here or there will make no difference at all given how big the sump is but if you want an extractor you could do worse than a pela 6000 which are about 50 quid on ebay and hold 6 litres and is what I use for oil changes although I find it or at least mine is quite slowChrispy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 1:31 pm Hi guys. Re: Dipstick or I drive
Mine nagged after service even though the dipstick showed it as fine.
I use a Mityvac 7201 to change the oil in ours.
If you are ‘vacuuming’ the oil it’s best to warm the engine first. Synthetic oils seem to be harder to extract easily when cold.

Re: Dipstick or I drive
Hmm - so the question is, at bang on max when cold / the car has been stood for a while, is that an issue? Based on earlier replies to this thread, in order to make iDrive happy a smidgen of oil needs to come out?
I'm no longer the sort to change my own oil (last cars I did that on were my E36's) as I quote honestly don't fancy 2x axle stands on a 2.5 tonne vehicle and doing it all on my back, so I don't want to invest in anything fancy to suck out some oil. So if I do have to pull a tiny bit out then something cheap and cheerful might do the job?

Re: Dipstick or I drive
Amazon do sell some 500ml vehicle oil syringes though you’ll need a bit more hose in order to get to the bottom of the dipstick. They’re under £10.
I know what you mean about rolling about under cars, it’s why I bought the Mityvac this year.
You could get whoever did the oil change to take some out as they overfilled it (according to Nagging Nora in the iDrive.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/original.gif)
