UPDATE >>>>>

I dont have 1.4.0. scanner, I have INPA software.

Does anyone know how to switch the bugger on with this software please?

Thanks
[/quote]

INPA wont do it..
That's more diagnostic / monitoring than coding..

ISTA-D should be able to from research.  But don't know where you'd get it.
NCS Expert may do it,but cant remember off hand, think you need to enable the module first before NCS will "see" it

Latest !!

After tinkering about using INPA yesterday, I came in and put the laptop away and thought no more about it.

Still no AUX HEATING in the screen menus.

This morning I went out to start the car to warm it before I got in.

10 minutes later the wife was screaming "Fire....Fire" !!!

I looked out and saw white smoke belching out from the bonnet at the passenger side.

I ran out, and switched off the engine but still continuous white smoke bowling out.

I lifted the bonnet and pulled the two electrical plugs off the webasto unit because as well as lots a smoke, it was whining loudly and the top of it was almost too hot to touch !!!

Whats Happened?????......Anyone?????....Please !!!!!!

Did you perform the functional test per chance??

I did that which fills the Webasto chamber with diesel!

took about 10 mins to burn it all off..

Yes steamy, I think I may have done.
Thing is, after I put the laptop away, I ran the car that afternoon and all was OK.
It was when I started it up next morning and left it ticking over on the drive the smoke started belching out.
So.....a)  why didn't the smoking happed the afternoon before
and b) If I did fill the chamber, why all the smoke?...Isn't that what happens normally?

Cheers !

The Webasto doesn't always run.

Your coolant temperature,or the air temperature may have been sufficient for it not to cut in.
Then following morning when all cold it may have been calling for it.

Unburnt diesel smokes significantly when heated as the combustion requirements are not properly achieved.

the webasto has a combustion fan so would force excess through the exhaust and when it gets the right temperatures will flash off / smoke.
This would trigger smoking at different points of the exhaust as the temperature spreads along it..
Also the glow plug in the unit will be causing the fuel around it to heat up and smoke.
It wont ignite until the required fuel air mixture is achieved, which a wet chamber cant produce.

It is scary at first but the only way out is to run it..
You could apply power to Pin1 of the Webasto and just run it solo until its cleared..

and b) the fuel / air mix is finely regulated when the Webasto is in use so filling the chamber will not be the same as normal running.

Well, it seems the elusive webasto unit appears to baffle us all despite my 3 x separate posts.

Done lots of digging, and I mean lots, but the unit and BMW are not giving uo their secrets.

I dont have a scanner 1.4.0 but have another software suite which has SSS PROGMAN, INPA, EDIABAS, WINKFP, TOOLSET32, DIS / GTI, NAVCODER. For some reason, none of these seem to be able to crack the secrets of webasto and BMW.

What I have found out is, and i've not seen this mentioned nywhere, that there is a webasto c and a webasto z.

The "Z" is a supplymentart heater for the engine and the "C" is an auxillary heater for the car interior and windscreen defrost as well as the engine.

The difference being that the "C" has an additional pump added to the webasto "Z" unit.

So.....it seems even if there was some miraculous way of "switching the unit to auxillary heating" it would be no good a s there is no circulation pump on the unit to heat the car etc.

Cant help wondering what is the point of all this soft ware I have bought if it cant do a simple task of "switching something in"

Another waste of money from fleabay.  :(

Have you thought of just asking a dealership what theyvwould charge to activate it for you?
Also, there are Webasto servicing companies up and down the country. Google them and give them a call they may not be able to activate it but can answer some of your queries

Webasto units are used in lots of commercial vehicles as well as leisure vehicles and boats, there are repair specialists out there who will service and sort out issues.  Never heard of one of the E53 diesels with one that couldn't be successfully activated to have the parking heater function - people who wanted to do it and came on the forum all seemed to manage.  The units do not seem to need a lot of servicing though, my 4.8is has one of the rare petrol versions and touch wood it has never needed attention, although hopefully the warranty will cover it if it does.    We have an ancient VW Caravelle that also has one of these - not Webasto, the other German make - I seem to recall Rover 75s had them as well.  Plus lots of trucks and boats!  The knowledge is out there !

Doesn't it make you wonder why it was disabled !!

No Webasto on the my 4.6 it can give enough stress without that. On a cold morning just start the engine scrape the ice heated seat on and go, couple of miles all is toasty.

I think BMW probably decided it was a nice expensive "optional extra" to disable and then charge megabucks for an order to have it "enabled" on the tick box list when speccing from new.    Or perhaps still a leftover from the days when UK car owners didn't "want" aircon as it was "unnecessary",  so things like parking heaters in UK build cars were possibly deemed "unnecessary" (they probably are, but quite nice to have sometimes! )

When I specced my X6 in 2010 the parking heater option was about £1,300.  Webasto units were no longer fitted as standard to the E71 and possibly not to the E70 either.

Aux heating on the E53 was not a European option so dealer will most likely not do it.
The Webasto was fitted as standard to the diesels to improve efficiency and get the engine up to temperature faster, but the Aux Heat was for US / Canada spec.

DIS WILL enable it as that is what I used for mine.
PROGMAN should do it as that is the next step the dealer used from DIS
INPA won't, and i don't believe NCS does thinking about it.
As for WINKFP i would advise not even powering that up as you can really easily brick your car with that unless you know what you are doing.

You have to go through the process to add the module on.
I can't remember the exact steps, but it is reasonably easy and straight forward to do as i made it up as i went.

Yes Steamy I think I'll have a go trying to switch it on using DIS, if I can muddle thro' it, although I think I may be wasting my time.

To be of any use in heating the car, the Webasto unit has to be of type "C" and not type"Z" which I think my car may have. (2006 3.0D uplift model)

Difference is I have learned is that a C type has an extra pump added to the unit to circulate hot water round the heater matrix in the car.

Mine is type Z which only directs water from it to the engine to bring it up to optimum temp. quicker.

I believe the reason it is not "switched on" in the UK is that it legally is not allowed as it is a fuel burning heater and it's not allowed to be left running unattended in the UK. Just as it's not allowed to start a car's engine and then walk away from it
