I am to believe that it disables the Xdrive system which normally alters the split of power going to either the front or the rear, pre facelifts have a standard transfer box that has a pre set ratio, facelifts have the Xdrive with an actuator and clutch packs that react to the traction control system and are capable of sending more power front or rear.
KKX5 is the expert, he repairs transfer boxes for a living I think.

kkx5 would it be safe to say the transfer box is probably knackered then?

1gen of the xdrive system (all bmw's up to 2010) : grinding/whining noise is always wrong tyres. Always.

thanks mate, do you reckon i am ok to drive it with the fuse out (only about 20-30 miles around town) and i'll sort tyres out at the weekend

Not safe for you ( no abs,dsc,tcs,rwd only ) but ok for gearbox,transfer,diff.

So will the noise go if he changes the tyres or is the damage already been done?

The noise will go. Damage could be done, but damaged transfer will not give you grinding noise. Even new transfer on wrong tyres will whin...

Can I jump in here? I have the same car and tyre setup. Kuhmo's on the rear and Durun on the front. More tread on the rear than front but not much. It came with these when I bought it three months ago. I have noticed a slight whine on acceleration. Probably always been there as I only noticed when I wound the window down last week.
Was always going to change them but I guess sooner or later would be better. Apart from the tread and different tyres they just will not hold pressure.
My budget will only stretch to let's say, a set of Toyo Proxes. Does anyone have experience of these tyres or a similar make? I really can't go past £800 all in and fitted.

My old Volvo V40 ran on Toyo rubber, thought the tyres were very sticky and soft but obviously wear rate was quite high. No idea what they would be like on the X tho

Ok. Bit baffled by the choice. I was planning on staying with non run flats but it's not essential. Am I right in thinking the E53 originally came with Bridgestone Duallers? They're coming in at around the grand mark.
I realise that tyre posts can generate a face palm reaction but I'm just looking for a few suggestions that fit the 315 and 275 size. I'm guessing there's no real bad tyres around the £200 mark.

E53 standard fit was Michelin Diamaris non-RFT

Also the bridgestones er30 are star rated and approved for use. Decided to stay with them after I got some advice from the tyre place (no he wasn't on commission!). I got approx 14-15k out if my last set but I do drive it like I stole it. £675 fitted. Warning tho they are a summer tyre, also check out blackcircles for a comparison
