why didnt they replace all of the clutches? i thought you were having a full on re-build?

did they remove any error codes aswell?

They probably did replace all the clutches ,...it was me just saying that those clutches were worn and the ones that came up on the diagnostics. All the codes were removed including the one he found where I'd flattened the battery trying to start it and the 'transfail' mode came up on the dash a few times ( or at least thats what I interpreted from what he was saying) ( spoken in English )
I can take it back down in the summer for a free check-over and he wants to see no new codes stored regarding  the gearbox...

have you got a receipt showing all of the parts that they replaced?

glad you got on ok with them matey, did you get the 12 month warranty with it?

also what was actually wrong with your gearbox in the 1st place?

Shreksta, yes I got a receipt, haven't looked at it though,..was too intent on getting car home. He gives a 12 month warranty and I asked him to stamp my service book with his stamp and the date and mileage .
The problem with the box , it was tripping into 'transfail mode' whenever I gave it throttle to overtake at speeds. Gear-changes were jerky, I could hear it slipping while engine speed increased. All these things could be reset by pulling over and switching off, waiting 30 seconds then off it went again. A week before it went in it done the same 'transfail mode' but this time it wouldn't reset and was stuck in 3rd gear I think. Nothing I did would reset it so it was arranged to get it down to them asap.
Very happy with the job,..been running around town today and where it used to jump gears and hesitate between gears it now sails up the same road in a fixed gear and pulls away very smoothly.

Great news then mate. Did your box have 'the lurch'?

I'm guessing yours is a facelift 3.0d sport, how many miles on it?

Yeah bud,... it's a facelift 3.0d sport,.... there's 140k on the clock, full service history but Birch says the gearbox oil was original ,..never changed,..black and contaminated.
The dreaded Lurch !!,...yup it had that too,..although its not nearly as bad now , its still there,...  he recons it needs a software update from BMW to sort that out >>> ??

You may also be able to get the firmware updated by a Bosch Auto Centre with the Autologic System.  The one nearest me in Herts redid all of mine as I had to have a new Mechatronics Unit as well as a rebuild.  The module comes 'brain dead' so has to be told it is in a BMW rather than one of the other cars the box is fitted into.

Would've thought being a specialist they could've upgraded the software for you bud?? Mine was done at the same time as the rebuild

sorry to hijack the thread .... but as i'm reading this it's the 3.0d and the v8's that seem to have the majority of problems with the gm box ???
mine has recently flashed up with a torque converter solenoid error on a long trip so as you'd expect my bank balance flashed before my eyes
spoke to a local (and somewhat tame) gearbox specialist and he's suggested an oil change and change the solenoid (£50 + vat from the dealer) before we look at having to rip the box out and send it his way for re-build

Glad it is sort and while it is a shame that it then has to be taken somewhere else to have firmware/software updated, it is really interesting to note that a a gearbox rebuild does NOT get rid of the lurch. Many folk on here assume their gearbox is on the way out when they have the lurch and that is clearly not necessarily the case.

Worth a shot. The gearbox oil change is not cheap as I recall .......
