I think the freewheel clutch is something to do with the 'Efficient Dynamics' systems where the Intelligent Alternator Control turns the alternator off (via the clutch) if the battery can cope and only bring it on line again during overrun and braking.  I think this started to appear around 2005/6 so perhaps from the E70 onwards, though certain E53s may also have it.

BMW recommend you change the belt and tensioner @

The fuel filter is recommended but they don't do that either

Oh believe me my BMW dealer doesnt miss the fuel filter .... :)

I was told by BMW the belt was in fact a chain and they didnt recommend a need for changing ....

[/quote] they probably thought you were asking about the timing chain, not the auxiliary belt.
But I've found most service adviser at any car dealers to be not too savvy with anything technical.
The access to the be,t is poor so with the aid of a torch you can give it a 6 monthly visual inspection to check for anything out of the ordinary.
