The Mk3 can be replaced with a Mk4 (DVD) drive computer and I believe is just plug & play. The lasers do fail eventually and that leaves the drive unable to see the disc.
The unit goes 'live' as soon as the car is awake, so when unlocked, or a door is opened, or the boot lid opened etc etc. It shuts down again when the car goes back to sleep.
