most likely was the sound of fluid bypassing and causing some erratic behaviour...
The usual place is the torque converter lock up clutch as that is the biggest and the potentially highest loaded clutch in the system, and also the one that is less sound proofed by other items!

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Re: Time to start saving
I did my own with the help of JPat transmissions just off the A39.
Look at www.jpat.co.uk
Very good for advice and parts
Refurb torque converters on site and usually within 48hrs.
Also a place called Robbs Garage overhauled my valve body and can't speak highly enough of them.
There is also a place in Scotland I would fully recommend you avoid like the plague but will not publically post their name....

I used the Devon Gearbox centre in Plymouth, excellent service. Fully recommend them. Takes 4-5 days depending on availability of the parts.

Wow, wrong side of 2.5k, that's a lot of money for a rebuild, is that the whole guts of the g/b or just the bits they find knackered. What sort of a guarantee do you get for that. Hope you don't mind me asking.

Re: Time to start saving
Mine was £2,200 5 years ago. That was for major overhaul kit, oil pump kit, gasket set, filter set and torque converter. The warranty company paid and the overhaul specialist always replaces all clutch sets, gaskets and filters. Most of the cost is the labour charge (20 hours) to remove, rebuild and replace plus set up the rebuild correctly. The parts were just under £650 if memory serves. The oil pump is not normally needed unless damaged (mine was).
Came with a 12-month warranty.
Mechatronics Unit is extra, and another £1,500 if faulty, plus coding. I had to have one of those too.
ZF 6-sp facelift gearbox....and at the time BMW quoted £7k.

That was for a full strip down of the box, all comsumables changed, clutch packs, solenoids, software update. 12 month warranty. Also included a filter and oil change after 2500 miles, top end bmw approved oil. Prob not the cheapest but rung around a fair few garages and all recommended the place I used.
Had a look at the old clutch packs (as I watched em strip down my gearbox) and they were well and truly goosed.

To be fair that's not a bad price all things considered. I would be happy to pay that.
I can't see how those other companies can offer it for like 900 quid..........there is loads of them listed on eBay, must be a scam.
Birch 4x4 are meant to good aswell up in Liverpool, the guys off the full fat range rover forum bang on about them

Can only think they don't change all of the components like they should. Gearbox oil costs a fortune on its own. They didn't charge me all that much for labour circa £200 but I guess they could always hide it in the mark up of parts (that's of course if they did that). I have a unlimited lifetime warranty on the torque convertor too, not sure if those things ever go wrong....
The gearbox specialist I used had a fair few X5's in for the same work along with a number of Range Rovers... common box I gather
