What I have found that helps are the built in blinds.  We could not get those for the Mini and I bought 'Window Sox' which go over the top of the rear doors (inside and out) like....well...a sock.  Australian made good kit, and kept that car much cooler when our little man was just a few months old.

I've seen these things recently and thought WTF are they!

:))

In simple terms just a black semi-see through heavy nylon mesh, custom made to fit the upper door and attached inside via Velcro tapes.  Nothing stuck to the car.  Can't be removed unless the door is open.

got mine done recently for £200. went for 20% 'factory tint' and i love the look.

the guys who did mine do a lot of tints for local dealers like land rover. be careful not to operate your rear windows for 48 hours after they're fitted. my brother went for 5%'limousine tint' for his x1 and although it looks good, he complains that is too dark and dingy in the rear for children. imo 20% lets in enough light whilst being dark enough to block out bright sunlight/glare.

I know of a couple of garages who take out the entire window panes which I hear is an outdated and risky method. With the tools available these days tints can be applied and cut neatly/tucked away without the need to remove the glass.
