Crikey.... I just celebrated today as I hit 30 mpg (computer said so) on a 47 mile journey

If I could have 40 mpg with no loss of performance or even drove better/smoother I'd be delerious.....I'd be still happy with 35 mpg as a trade off with a bit more oomph

What I don't get is why (providng they're good programs) that the code has to be sent off....are not all X5s of a certain engine/age/build to same dealer program or is this just insurance to know what's what?

My indy reckoned he had a new diagnostic box that (perhaps with code from somewhere) could re-map for me....price unknown

Interesting point raised there, as if indeed the dealer could "wipe" a remap, it implies that they are all the same and therefore a remap should also apply to all cars or is it a case that a remap is completely done on the individual characteristics of an engine than use a "generic" map?

Wow 30mpg from the diesels, thats brilliant! I'd love to see my X5 4.4 V8 reach 20mpg let alone 30mpg, it currently does 16 - 17 mpg!

should be glad you don't have 4.6 and only doing short journeys - nearly got out cake and candles as I got 12.1 mpg.

Maybe - but could be a false economy if you got your V8 at a very good price noting that the diesels attract a substantial premium over the petrols - despite fuel prices, I suspect you could still buy a lot of petrol for the difference

Preemptive driving in town (i.e. not using the brakes often) and on the motorway a fairly steady .85 leptons. Change of speed is what hits the consumption on these heavy cars so by not joining a traffic queue at full speed makes a lot of difference.

Must say that when Mrs PVR drives the consumption is late twenties.

Dunno....maybe Jason can answer this one

I thought that if the code was sent off it was sort of like a blue print in order to pick the appropriate alternative map off the shelf (having been previously developed) so to speak

therefore
map A becomes tweaked A
map B becomes tweaked B

etc

where map A relates to engine x....car y etc...

dunno.....maybe that's why the new code can be put back in so quick?

Cruise control is interesting....amazing when I hit a sweat spot of just over 60mph where the range starts to increase

Not convinced though as it doesn't coast well. On our roller coaster motorways it can back right off, big time engine drag to stop accelerating...only to plant it up the other side
