.....taking the wheel off on many cars is a thing of the past as they now have a steering angle sensor and removing the wheel can mess things up. some also have a master spline setup and cannot be moved. as the e53 is a fairly old platform neither of these probable exist but just a warning.
I have had my steering wheel off in the past and can confirm neither of the above exist
I am pretty sure the E53 does have a steering angle sensor albeit its right down the bottom of the column & not normally seen on a steering wheel change.

Part 9

IT DOES have a steering wheel angle sensor...well it does on my facelift. As per this article the steering wheel ended up off centre ( 5mins to 10 mins past) due to some track rod end replacement. After say 20 miles...or some tight corner steering the 4wd would disconnect.

This was diagnosed as improbable steering angle (maybe this is an xdrive protection thing) as the wheel pointing right and driving forward threw it. Indy said he could recalib or zero it but sorting the tracking out with the wheel back on centre did just the same..as you'd expect...as in back to normal

It's (the steering wheel) aint bang on, it's 2 mins past or less so there must b some tolerance in improbable angle
