I've heard the clutches wear quickly on the manual gearbox!

Nothing really to go wrong with a manual.  Even if the clutch does wear out (which it will) it's cheaper than a new transmission.

..... And maybe put some money aside for for the possibility of gearbox failure

Out of curiosity are auto trans more prone to failures than manual?
[/quote]
I did just that, I brought the best/cheapest/latest one I could for my money last year, it came with full coopers york history at 115,000 miles,2005 and 8 new tyres for £6.2k, last year this was a bargain at that price and hoped I would get at least 25k out of her before I got the gearbox issues. One year and 15,000 miles later and touch wood the car has caused me no probs at all but for the rear suspension dropping (easy fix!) and a rear light, the box has always given a slight lurch every now and then when changing into 1st and standstill, Im wondering now whether I should change the oil and filter in the box to give a few more miles or just leave it until the box goes awol and fit another???????
thoughts anyone?.....I did fActor 2k into the purchase of it originally.

The automatic gearbox centre near where I live charges £140! So guessing that's similar price everywhere.  8)

Just curios, did you get yours gearbox rebuilt, or did you call it a day on your X?
Like you say, auto boxes can be a  weak link on these cars.

Not bad though 140k on the same gearbox.

I had the box refurbed, think all they do is put some fresh oil and a new torque converter in.

I've used these guys a couple times now! They use the oil grade BMW intended for the gearbox!  ::)

Had a small weep on the gearbox pan, had the oil changed, new filters and seals. Cured the jolt when coming to a stop. Changed at 85K - only done 1.5 k since but all good so far.
